NaviLens: A New Way to Navigate NJ TRANSIT
Are you looking for a more accessible and convenient way to use NJ TRANSIT services? Do you want to get real-time information about bus arrivals, service alerts, and trip planning? Do you want to explore new places with confidence and independence?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might be interested in NaviLens, a new technology that empowers people, especially those who are blind or have low vision, to independently navigate by translating visual signage into audio messages.
What is NaviLens?
NaviLens technology consists of two mobile phone applications and a multi-colored QR-style code. The codes can be scanned from up to 60 feet away, even when the user is unaware of their location or orientation. The codes provide information such as next bus arrivals, service status, directions, and more, all of which can be translated into 33 different languages using Google Translate.
The two NaviLens mobile apps are:
- The NaviLens App is designed especially for people who are blind or have low vision. It reads the codes and provides audio messages that guide the user to the code and provide the information stored in it.
- The NaviLens GO app is designed for sighted users. It provides text messages and augmented reality features that help the user navigate the environment and access the information stored in the codes.
How to Use NaviLens?
To use NaviLens, you need to download the free NaviLens app or NaviLens GO app to your iOS or Android device. The NaviLens GO app can also be downloaded by scanning the standard QR code located in the lower right-hand corner of the sign located at the bus stop.
Then, open the app and hold your phone at chest level as you walk towards any of the NJ TRANSIT bus stops that have NaviLens codes installed. The app will scan the environment and detect the codes in the area. You can then listen to or read the information provided by the codes.
Where to Find NaviLens?
NaviLens is currently being piloted in New Brunswick, where 51 NJ TRANSIT bus stops have been equipped with NaviLens codes. The following locations are part of this pilot:
Burnet Street | Easton Avenue |
George Street | George's Road |
Huntington Street | Livingston Avenue |
Remsen Avenue | Route 18 |
Sandford Street | Somerset Street |
Once the pilot program concludes, NJ TRANSIT will evaluate the results and explore integrating NaviLens features into the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App and expanding the program to more of NJ TRANSIT’s ~16,000 bus stops.
