First/Last Mile Connections: Bikes, E-Bikes, Scooters, and More
Do you live close to one of our train stations, light rail stations, or bus stops and find yourself consistently fighting for a parking spot? Do you find yourself stuck in traffic on the way to one of our commuter lots while people on bikes zip right past you? Or do you live just far enough away that walking is inconvenient? If so, consider biking or scooting over to our stations and stops! Free of charges and permits!
See below for details about how NJ TRANSIT supports bikes, personal electric vehicles (such as e-bikes, electric scooters, and segways) & personal vehicles (such as scooters & skateboards). Note that for passengers’ safety, riding or charging personal vehicles inside NJ TRANSIT facilities or on-board NJ TRANSIT vehicles is strictly prohibited. Hoverboards, tandem bicycles, and gasoline-powered personal vehicles (such as mopeds) are prohibited on all NJ TRANSIT vehicles. If you have a foldable personal vehicle, you must fold it before boarding any NJ TRANSIT vehicles, at any time of day. And no, passengers cannot remove the wheels from their non-foldable bike and call it a foldable-bike.
And because our passengers’ safety always comes first, NJ TRANSIT employees may limit personal vehicles onboard transit vehicles when crowded or when it creates an unsafe situation.
- NJ TRANSIT Trains

FOLDING PERSONAL VEHICLES ARE ALWAYS PERMITTED ON ALL NJ TRANSIT TRAINS.
Non-Folding personal vehicles are permitted on NJ TRANSIT trains as described below:
Non – Folding Personal Vehicle Regulations Permitted Non-Permitted Weekdays - At all times on Atlantic City Line
- All other rail lines: 10am – 4pm and 7pm – 6am
- On trains arriving in Hoboken, Newark, or New York between 6 am – 10 am, and departing between 4pm – 7 pm
These restrictions also apply to any station stops in between during those timeframes
Weekends - At all times on Raritan Valley, Gladstone, Montclair-Boonton, Main, Bergen County, Pascack Valley, Port Jervis, and Atlantic City Line trains.
- On NEC, NJCL and Morristown trains between 1pm – 4pm and 8pm – 9am.
- On NEC, NJCL and Morristown train lines arriving in New York between 9 am -12pm and departing New York between 5pm and 8pm
These restrictions also apply to any station stops in between during those timeframes
Holidays* - At all times on Atlantic City Line
- Not permitted on any other train lines**
Holidays include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, day after Thanksgiving, Sunday after Thanksgiving and Christmas Day)
** Including the day before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but are permitted on the holidays themselves- Trains can accommodate up to two personal vehicles on each single-level rail car and up to eight personal vehicles on each multilevel rail car subject to crowding or the accessibility needs of other passengers.
- Personal vehicles must be kept in the accessible area.
- Folding personal vehicles should be stored in the overhead luggage rack whenever possible. If this is not possible, the vehicle must be stored in a place that would not be a safety hazard for other passengers.
- Non-folding personal vehicles are not permitted on substitute bus service during rail service outages.
- NJ TRANSIT Buses

FOLDING PERSONAL VEHICLES ARE ALWAYS PERMITTED ON ALL NJ TRANSIT BUSES.
Non-folding personal vehicles are always permitted on buses using bicycle racks on the front or with underfloor luggage compartments on a first-come, first-served basis. If space is not available, passengers with any type of personal vehicle must wait for the next available bus.
Bus operators may limit personal vehicles when buses are crowded or when they believe it creates an unsafe situation.Bike racks are available on all buses in the NJ TRANSIT Southern Division (generally the area from Princeton/Trenton to Atlantic City and south). Bike racks are available on most buses through Central and Northern NJ.
Regular bikes and e-bikes are not permitted on the bicycle racks on buses traveling into NYC. - NJ TRANSIT Light Rail

River LINE
Non-folding personal vehicles are always permitted aboard River LINE vehicles and bicycle hanging racks are available.
Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) and Newark Light Rail (NLR)
Non-folding personal vehicles can be carried on board HBLR and NLR vehicles between 9:30am to 4pm and between 7pm to 6am on weekdays, and all day on weekends and holidays.
- Know Before You Ride & General Safety Reminders

Always walk with your personal vehicle on platforms and in NJ TRANSIT facilities.
Allow other passengers to exit and enter NJ TRANSIT vehicles before boarding or exiting with a personal vehicle. Passengers must be able to lift their personal vehicle up and down stairs while boarding and deboarding vehicles.
If space is not available, passengers with personal vehicles must wait for the next available NJ TRANSIT vehicle. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities have priority over the accessible area. Passengers with personal vehicles may need to deboard and wait for the next available vehicle if a person with disabilities requires the accessible area.
Passengers under 16 traveling with personal vehicles must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Personal vehicles must have a wheel diameter that neither exceeds 27 inches nor be more than 80 inches long and 48 inches high. The personal vehicle also cannot weigh more than 100 pounds.
Property of a shared or rented personal vehicle provider (Citi Bike, Lime, Bird, etc.) are not allowed on any NJ TRANSIT vehicle or property.
Bicycle kickstands must always remain up when on board NJ TRANSIT vehicles.
TRAINS: For larger personal vehicles, secure it with tiedowns in the accessible area of the rail car as shown on the diagram at that location. Passengers may alternatively hold and steady a personal vehicle that is not secured by tiedowns.BUSES: If using a bicycle rack, notify the bus operator before loading or unloading the personal vehicle. For safety reasons, the bus operator cannot get off the bus to assist passengers with personal vehicles but will be able to give instructions.
- Child carrier seats and tandem bicycles are not permitted bus bicycle racks.
- All loose items should be removed from the personal vehicle before the bus arrives.
- The use of bicycle locks on bus bicycle racks is prohibited. We recommend sitting near the front of the bus to keep an eye on the personal vehicle.
LIGHT RAIL: Remain in the low floor vestibule section of the vehicle and hold or secure the personal vehicle while traveling.

- Safety Instructions, Considerations & Liability

If a NJ TRANSIT employee or an employee of an entity under contract to NJ TRANSIT considers a personal vehicle to be a safety hazard, or if a NJ TRANSIT vehicle is too crowded, the employee may not allow the personal vehicle on board.
At NJ TRANSIT facilities, use stairways, ramps, or elevators to gain access to station platforms. Do not use escalators. Walk personal vehicles when passing through stations.
Personal vehicles and batteries may not block doors, aisles, or safety equipment. They also may not be left unaccompanied, be placed on empty seats, or cause inconvenience to other passengers.Personal vehicles and batteries may not be discarded, stored, locked to any NJ TRANSIT property, or abandoned for any reason.
Personal electric vehicles must remain powered off while on any NJ TRANSIT vehicle or property.
Personal vehicles are transported at the owner's risk. NJ TRANSIT is not responsible for personal vehicles that are lost, stolen or damaged while on board any NJ TRANSIT vehicle or at any NJ TRANSIT facility.
Passengers with personal vehicles assume all liability for any damage or injury to persons or property resulting from, or in connection with, the carriage of a personal vehicle on NJ TRANSIT trains, buses or light rail vehicles, or at or near any facility used in connection with NJ TRANSIT services.
Passengers failing to follow the safety requirements and outlined restrictions, or the direction of NJ TRANSIT officials, are subject to removal from the system.
- Personal Vehicle Parking & Storage

NJ TRANSIT provides free parking capacity for over 3,000 personal vehicles at stations and park & rides. Bike racks are located at about 90 percent of the train stations in New Jersey, at several bus park ride lots, bus terminals, and at most Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and River LINE stations. Enclosed, locked bike lockers are available for long-term rental at a number of locations. These provide parking for about 350 personal vehicles. Rentals are administered locally by Transportation Management Associations or municipalities. Contact the organizations shown below concerning lockers at the following stations or park/rides:

- PEVs must remain powered off during transport.

- Property of a shared or rented PEV provider (e.g. Citi Bike, Lime, Bird, Lynx, etc.) is not allowed on the NJ TRANSIT System.
- PEVs and their batteries must never be left unattended, discarded, stored, locked to any NJ TRANSIT property within the system, or abandoned for any reason.

Emergencies
Passengers with personal vehicles must follow direction from the train crew, bus or light rail operator, other authorized personnel, police, local authorities and/or fire officials. If an emergency should occur, passengers may be required to leave their personal vehicles onboard. Personal vehicles are not permitted on substitute bus service.
