***UPDATED*** NJ TRANSIT ENHANCES SERVICE FOR CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY

Getaway Service Provided

NEWARK, NJ, December 20, 2001 -- NJ TRANSIT will adjust its rail, light rail and bus service for travelers during the Christmas holiday weekend, including early getaway service on Friday, December 21 and Monday, December 24.

"NJ TRANSIT wants to make this holiday weekend a safe and enjoyable one for New Jersey residents traveling throughout the region," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Jeffrey A. Warsh. "The Corporation will provide early getaway service from Penn Station New York, Newark Penn Station, Hoboken Terminal and the Port Authority Bus Terminal to accommodate travelers. We will also provide frequent service on Christmas Day."

Customers are reminded to purchase their tickets in advance before boarding a train, bus or light rail vehicle. Newark City Subway and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail customers must also validate their tickets before riding.

Following are details of the service planned by NJ TRANSIT for the upcoming holiday weekend:

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21

  • Buses and trains are on regular weekday schedules, with early getaway service available on some lines (details listed below).
  • Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and the Newark City Subway are on a regular weekday schedule.

Early getaway trains include:

  • Boonton Line -- An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1:30 p.m. and make all stops to Montclair Heights, where it will arrive at 2:06 p.m.
  • Montclair Branch -- An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 2:30 p.m. and make all stops to Bay Street, where it will arrive at 3:02 p.m.
  • North Jersey Coast Line -- An early getaway train will depart Newark at 3:49 p.m., operate express to Woodbridge, then make all local stops to Bay Head, where it will arrive at 5:44 p.m. (A connecting train leaves Penn Station New York at 3:30 p.m.)

Early getaway bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT):

  • NJ TRANSIT will provide early getaway service on commuter services out of New York between 12 noon and 4 p.m. as customer demand warrants.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22 AND SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23

Buses, trains and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail are on regular weekend schedules.

  • The Newark City Subway will not operate as construction continues on a future extension of the system. Substitute bus service will be provided according to regular schedules.
  • Additional bus service will be available to malls and shopping centers. Customers should check special service notices for details.

CHRISTMAS EVE, MONDAY, DECEMBER 24

  • Trains will operate on weekday schedules, with early getaway service as noted below.
  • Buses in North and South Jersey will follow weekday, holiday or Saturday schedules, depending on the line. Early getaway service will be provided from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Some routes will not operate. Details are listed below. Customers should also check special service notices for exact service information.
  • The Newark City Subway will operate a modified weekday schedule, with service every eight minutes during both peak periods and midday hours.
  • Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekday schedule.

Early getaway trains and/or trains making extra station stops include:

Bergen County Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1:50 p.m. and make all stops to Waldwick, where it will arrive at 2:39 p.m.
  • An additional eastbound train will depart Ridgewood at 4:28 p.m. and will stop at Radburn, Rutherford and Harmon Cove. It will arrive in Hoboken at 5:04 p.m.
  • Regularly scheduled trains departing Hoboken at 4:57 p.m. (train 1257), 5:24 p.m. (train 1259) and 5:57 p.m. (train 1261) will be extended to make all station stops between Harmon Cove and Suffern.
  • To accommodate the extended and early getaway service, trains that normally depart Hoboken at 4:54 p.m. (train 1159), 5:21 p.m. (train 1161) and 5:50 p.m. (train 1163) WILL NOT operate.

Boonton Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1:30 p.m. and make all stops to Montclair Heights, where it will arrive at 2:06 p.m.

Main Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1 p.m. and make all stops to Waldwick, where it will arrive at 1:55 p.m.

Montclair Branch

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 2:30 p.m. and make all stops to Bay Street, where it will arrive at 3:02 p.m.

Northeast Corridor

  • An early getaway train will depart New York at 1:54 p.m., make stops at Newark Penn and Newark International Airport stations, operate express to Metropark, then make all stops to Trenton. It will arrive in Trenton at 3:09 p.m.

North Jersey Coast Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Newark at 3:49 p.m., operate express to Woodbridge, then make all local stops to Bay Head, where it will arrive at 5:44 p.m. (A connecting train leaves NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 3:30 p.m.)

Pascack Valley Line

  • Early getaway trains will depart Hoboken at 1:32 p.m. and 3:35 p.m., making all stops to Spring Valley.
  • To accommodate this additional service, trains that normally depart Hoboken at 5:07 p.m. (train 1605), 5:28 p.m. (train 1607) and 6:04 p.m. (train 1611) WILL NOT operate.

Port Jervis Line

  • The 1:20 p.m. departure from Hoboken (train 53) will be extended beyond Middletown, NY to Otisville, NY and Port Jervis, NY. This train WILL NOT stop at Ridgewood or Ramsey. Arrival time in Port Jervis is 3:30 p.m.
  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 2:50 p.m. and make all station stops between Allendale, NJ and Port Jervis, NY. Arrival time at Port Jervis is 5:06 p.m.
  • To accommodate the extended and early getaway service, the 3:25 p.m. departure from Middletown, NY (train 62) and the 5:16 p.m. (train 59) and 6:23 p.m. (train 63) departures from Hoboken WILL NOT operate.

Raritan Valley Line

  • Train 5425, the 1:06 p.m. departure from Newark to Raritan will be extended, serving all stations between Raritan and High Bridge. This train arrives in High Bridge at 2:29 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 12:43 p.m.)
  • An early getaway train leaves Newark Penn Station at 3:32 p.m. and makes all stops to Raritan except Finderne. The train arrives in Raritan at 4:29 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 3:07 p.m.)
  • To accommodate early getaway and extended service, two early evening trains -- the 6:23 p.m. High Bridge express (train 5711) and the 6:29 p.m. Plainfield local (train 5903) -- will be combined. The combined train will depart Newark at 6:29 p.m. and make all stops to High Bridge.

Early getaway bus service from Port Authority Bus Terminal:

NJ TRANSIT will provide early getaway service on the following commuter services out of New York between 12 noon and 4 p.m.

  • No. 113 Dunellen-New York (Parkway Express)
  • No. 114 Somerville-New York
  • No. 116 Perth Amboy-New York
  • No. 126 Hoboken-New York
  • No. 131 Sayreville-New York
  • No. 133 Old Bridge-Aberdeen-New York
  • No. 134 Browntown-New York
  • No. 137 Toms River-New York (including express service)
  • No. 138 East Brunswick-New York

  • No. 321 Vince Lombardi Park/Ride-New York (customers who normally use this route should use the No. 320 North Bergen Park/Ride-New York route)
  • No. 604 East Trenton-Trenton Rail Station
  • No. 611 Perry Street Park/Ride Shuttle

CHRISTMAS DAY, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 25

  • Trains, buses and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on Sunday schedules.
  • The Newark City Subway will operate on a special schedule. Light rail service will be available every 20 minutes from about 6 a.m. until about 9:30 p.m. and every 30-40 minutes at other times.

The statewide transit agency's bus and rail Weekend Family Super Saver Fare, which allows two children 11 and under to travel free with each fare-paying adult, will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday, December 21 until 6 a.m. Wednesday, December 26. Senior citizen and round-trip excursion tickets will be valid without restriction throughout the period.
