**UPDATED** NEW JERSEY PREPARED FOR TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS TO NEW YORK CITY

Options Include Park/Rides, Carpooling and Public Transportation

NEWARK, NJ, September 27, 2001 -- With New York City’s ban on single-occupancy vehicles (SOVs) extended to the Lincoln Tunnel on Friday, September 28, between 6 a.m. and 12 noon, travel impacts in New Jersey are expected to be significant.

SOV drivers are being provided with the following alternatives:

  • Carpooling from designated locations between New Jersey and New York.
  • Additional bus park/ride service from three locations.
  • NJ TRANSIT rail passes and tickets are will be honored on certain Amtrak trains.
  • An additional MidTOWN DIRECT train during the evening peak period and rail cars added to several existing trains to relieve overcrowding.
  • New York workers are advised to speak with their employers to explore all work options including telecommuting or flex-time.

SOV drivers are advised to carpool into Manhattan at designated carpool locations. People interested in securing carpool matches to rideshare should call 1-888-648-6007.

SOV drivers can also travel to designated bus park/rides at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford off 16W of the New Jersey Turnpike or the Vince Lombardi Park/Ride near Interchange 17 of the New Jersey Turnpike. Please note that customers cannot use the Meadowlands Sports Complex Park/Ride on Monday, October 1 because of a New York Jets game that evening. In addition, there is NO automobile park/ride facility inside Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Academy Bus will operate its regular service between the PNC Bank Arts Center -- off Garden State Parkway Exit 116 -- and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York. At the PNC, 10 additional buses will operate from the facility, which has 500 parking spaces available.

Academy also will operate its regular bus service between the Meadowlands Sports Complex -- off Exit 16W of the New Jersey Turnpike -- and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York. Up to 75 additional buses will operate from the Meadowlands where there are 7,000 parking spaces available. These additional buses will depart the Meadowlands facility between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. with return service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Coach USA/Suburban will operate additional buses from the East Brunswick Transportation Center and the Old Bridge Park/Ride. Regular Coach USA/Suburban service will be available from the Suburban Transit garage on Route 27 in New Brunswick and the Kendall Park Shopping Center in South Brunswick. Coach USA also has a park/ride facility with parking spaces available in Mahwah, as well as additional location in Orange and Rockland counties in New York. If possible, customers should arrange to be dropped off at all locations.

NJ TRANSIT will operate four additional buses from its Vince Lombardi park/ride facility, located within the Vince Lombardi rest area off the New Jersey Turnpike’s Interchange 17.

In addition, Amtrak has also agreed to honor all NJ TRANSIT rail passes and tickets between Newark and New York only on eight inbound morning trains (between 6:21 a.m. and 9:59 a.m.) and seven outbound afternoon trains (between 4:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.). This does NOT include Acela Express or Metroliner trains.

Central Jersey commuters are also advised to use the recently established bus/ferry service between New Jersey and New York. NJ TRANSIT has teamed up with Academy Bus, Suburban/Coach USA and Liberty Water Taxi to provide a bus/ferry connection for commuters who formerly traveled by bus to lower Manhattan -- which remains closed as search and recovery efforts continue. Buses from Ocean, Monmouth and Middlesex counties that formerly served Lower Manhattan are being redirected to Liberty State Park in Jersey City where connecting ferry service is available at no additional charge.

Starting tomorrow, Friday, September 28, NJ TRANSIT will add a new westbound MidTOWN DIRECT train to its schedule. Train 6699 will depart Penn Station New York at 6:08 p.m. and operate express to Summit, then make all local stops to Dover except Mount Tabor. It will arrive in Dover at 7:20 p.m. NJ TRANSIT is also adding rail cars on several Northeast Corridor and MidTOWN DIRECT trains. However, the Corporation reminds customers that capacity is extremely limited on many of its peak period trains. Also, customers accessing rail stations are advised to get dropped off at facilities as parking is limited.

Customers can also check NJ TRANSIT’s website, www.njtransit.com, for the latest information. Commuters are also urged to monitor broadcasts traffic reports for information.
