NJ TRANSIT Buses and Trains Will Cross-Honor September Monthly Train Passes For Benson Street Customers

NEWARK, NJ, AUGUST 27, 2002 -- On Monday, September 30, NJ TRANSIT will launch its MidTOWN DIRECT -- Montclair rail service, resulting in the closure of Benson Street, Rowe Street and Arlington stations on the Boonton Line after the last scheduled trip on Friday, September 20.

Between Friday, September 20 and Sunday, September 29, NJ TRANSIT will complete work on the Montclair Connection, allowing for the smooth transition to the new MidTOWN DIRECT service on Monday, September 30.

Beginning Monday, September 23, shuttle buses -- provided by NJ TRANSIT and operated by communities affected by the station closures -- will transport commuters to other rail stations to make connections to Hoboken-bound trains and eventually MidTOWN DIRECT -- Montclair rail service.

"We want to make this a smooth transition by offering a variety of alternatives for commuters who will be affected by the changes," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director George Warrington. "We are working with the communities affected to alleviate some of the uncertainties our customers may experience when switching to a new commuting routine. These shuttle bus services will connect many passengers with their trains, and in some cases commuters can access NJ TRANSIT buses that are in close proximity to the closed stations to make their connections."

September monthly rail passes, with Rowe Street as the origin, will be cross-honored on NJ TRANSIT trains and buses serving that area, including Montclair, Newark Broad Street and Newark Penn Station, Glen Ridge, Watsessing and Lyndhurst stations. Customers who use the Rowe Street Station should consider using Bloomfield Station. A rail shuttle bus will provide transportation between Rowe Street Station and Bloomfield Station weekday mornings and evenings. Bloomfield Township is finalizing the rail shuttle bus schedule, which customers should receive as soon as it is available.

Customers can take NJ TRANSIT Bus Route No. 92, which travels along Belleville Avenue, to Newark City Subway's Branch Brook Park Station for service to Newark Penn Station. Bus Route 93M, which operates along Montgomery Avenue during peak periods only, also serves Branch Brook Park Station. Please see timetables for trip times and details.
