NEWARK, NJ ¿¿ More than 3,000 canned goods and non-perishable food items will soon fill the shelves of food banks in the greater Miami and West Palm Beach areas, thanks to the help of NJ TRANSIT customers and employees.

After a successful weeklong effort to collect non-perishable food for Florida hurricane victims, NJ TRANSIT¿along with New England Motor Freight (NEMF), Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity and Omega Phi Beta Latina Sorority¿loaded boxes of food on a NEMF truck at Newark Penn Station today, to be transported to Florida.

¿I want to thank NJ TRANSIT customers and employees who participated in the food drive for their generous contributions,¿ NJ TRANSIT Chairman and Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere said. ¿I also want to thank NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors Vice-Chair Mike Shevell for his generosity in providing the use of his freight company to transport boxes of collected food. No matter how big or small donations were, they will fill a help in the recovery effort that continues in Florida.¿

¿Florida has suffered tremendously this hurricane season, and we wanted to do our part to help,¿ said NJ TRANSIT Board Member Flora Castillo. ¿Food bank resources were completely drained, and the current situation could have long term impacts on the ability of food banks to meet the needs of the communities they serve. What we¿ve collected will hopefully assist them in their efforts.¿

¿Despite busy schedules, our customers and employees took time out to do something meaningful for people in need,¿ NJ TRANSIT Executive Director George D. Warrington said. ¿I want to thank all those who participated in the food drive, and I especially want to thank our partners in this effort¿Lambda Sigma Upsilon Fraternity and Omega Phi Beta Sorority.¿
