NEWARK, NJ — Northeast Corridor rail service between Trenton and New York is being restored as of 6:45 a.m., subject to 10 to 15 minute delays, following an earlier Amtrak power problem caused by a transformer fire in New Brunswick. Northeast Corridor service out of Jersey Avenue Station remains suspended at this time.
The fire resulted in a loss of overhead power on most of the Northeast Corridor between Trenton and New York. As a result, it was necessary for NJ TRANSIT to suspend Northeast Corridor rail service prior to the start of morning service. Limited diesel train service operated on the North Jersey Coast Line between Bay Head and Hoboken Terminal, and Midtown Direct trains were routed to and from Hoboken, where customers could connect to PATH trains at no additional charge.
At approximately 5 a.m., Amtrak restored power on a portion of the Northeast Corridor between Rahway and New York. At that time, North Jersey Coast Line and Midtown Direct service to and from New York was restored. Because the power problem continued south of Rahway, Northeast Corridor service between Trenton and New York remained suspended until 6:45 a.m., at which time power was restored with some restrictions.
