NEWARK, NJ — In light of the continued extreme heat and as a means of safeguarding the interests of our customers, NJ TRANSIT is extending its proactive, precautionary actions through Sunday evening designed to enhance safety, convenience and comfort.  All customers are advised to monitor njtransit.com, or monitor NJ TRANSIT’s Twitter feed at @NJ_TRANSIT for the latest service information.

  • All NJ TRANSIT owned and operated rail station waiting rooms will remain open for ticketed customers through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.
  • Commuter trains departing Hoboken Terminal will continue to be posted at least 20 minutes in advance through Sunday evening, enabling ticketed customers to board air-conditioned trains further in advance of their departure times.
  • Buses departing the Port Authority Bus Terminal will permit the early boarding of ticketed customers through Sunday evening, once the bus has arrived at the departure gate.
  • Additional NJ TRANSIT customer service representatives will continue to be deployed to key rail hubs throughout the weekend.

NJ TRANSIT is prepared to minimize disruptions and delays to the extent possible, particularly in light of the extreme heat and the prospect for severe thunderstorms over the course of this weekend.  Bus, rail and light rail crews and equipment remain on standby to quickly respond to breakdowns, power outages or other issues that may arise.  In addition, NJ TRANSIT will continue to position locomotives at strategic locations across the rail system to rapidly respond in the event of a disabled train.

Additionally:

  • Overhead wires, which are vulnerable to consecutive high-temperature days, and more than 750 rail switches have already been inspected as part of NJ TRANSIT’s preventative maintenance program.
  • Onboard cooling systems, thermostats, weather stripping and electronic components have been inspected on NJ TRANSIT railcars, light rail cars and locomotives.
  • Bus maintenance personnel have inspected and performed necessary maintenance on a fleet of nearly 2,200 buses - from the cooling and airbrake systems, to the engine fluids, tires, windshield wipers and doors.
