NJ TRANSIT HOSTS VIRTUAL EVENT TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY ON PORTAL NORTH BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT
Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Encouraged to Participate in the Project
May 19, 2021
“The Portal North Bridge Project is an integral piece of New Jersey’s development and growth. And as such, I am proud that NJ Transit is committed to creating opportunities for small, socially and economically disadvantaged businesses to be a part of this undertaking,” said NJ TRANSIT Board Member Shanti Narra.
“NJ TRANSIT is committed to breaking down the barriers facing DBEs in the construction industry, and as this conference underscores, our strategy for Portal North is to maximize contract opportunities for certified DBEs,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “This project represents an opportunity to develop a larger pool of qualified contractors that represents the diversity of the region we serve, in addition to improving service and reliability, generating billions of dollars in economic activity, and creating thousands of jobs to support New Jersey’s economic recovery as we emerge from the pandemic.”
Attendees of the conference heard from New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver and President & CEO Corbett along with industry partners, Board members, and other elected officials who underscored the importance of the agency’s continued commitment to building diversity in the contracting pool.
This event provided an opportunity to connect and network with DBEs, non-DBEs, and other suppliers, in a virtual environment to help all parties understand the contracting process and facilitate communication between businesses.
Four teams were pre-qualified to submit bids on this procurement. Part of this DBE outreach effort is the unique opportunity to network and interact with one or more of the following four teams:
- Skanska Traylor PNB Joint Venture, Queens, NY
- HS Constructors, Joint Venture, Nanuet, NY
- Kiewit Infrastructure Company, Woodcliff Lake, NJ
- Tutor Perini/O&G Joint Venture, New Rochelle, NY
The Portal North Bridge project will replace the century-old Portal Bridge with a new high-level, fixed span structure that will allow marine traffic to pass underneath without interrupting rail traffic. Once full construction begins, the Portal North Bridge project is estimated to be completed in approximately five and a half years.
