HOBOKEN, NJ, May 31, 2001 --The Stanley Cup, North America's oldest and most famous team sports trophy, today greeted NJ TRANSIT's homebound commuters at historic Hoboken Terminal as the New Jersey Devils prepared to face the Colorado Avalanche tonight in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. The series is tied at one game apiece.
The Cup was on display in the Terminal's main waiting room during the afternoon rush hour, allowing thousands of commuters to catch a glimpse of the trophy on their way home.
"Hoboken Terminal is one of New Jersey's historic landmarks," said NJ TRANSIT Board Chairman and State Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein. It is an appropriate host for one of the most storied trophies in all of sports and is a wonderful location for Devils' fans to see the trophy their team is fighting to retain."
Among those who welcomed the trophy to Hoboken was NJ TRANSIT Executive Director -- and ardent Devils fan -- Jeffrey A. Warsh.
"It's an exciting time for Devils fans and all of New Jersey," said Warsh. "I'm pleased that NJ TRANSIT customers and Devils fans had a chance to see this piece of sports history, a trophy I hope will be retained by New Jersey's hockey team for another year."
Hoboken Terminal was opened in February 1907 and currently serves NJ TRANSIT trains operating on the Bergen County, Boonton, Gladstone, Main, Montclair, Morristown, North Jersey Coast, Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines. The terminal also hosts NJ TRANSIT buses, PATH and New York Waterway ferry service. An extensive restoration of the Beaux-Arts style building was highlighted by the 1999 re-opening of the restored waiting room. The Terminal was listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1973.
NEWARK, NJ, May 31, 2001 -- NJ TRANSIT recently honored 94 bus operators for many years of accident-free driving. Together they have accumulated a collective 1,417 years of safe driving.
Each year, NJ TRANSIT presents Safe Driving Awards to its bus operators with 10, 20 and 30 or more years of accident-free service. Accident-free driving is defined as a bus operator not having an at-fault accident.
"At NJ TRANSIT, safety always comes first," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Jeffrey A. Warsh. "Our customers, our employees and all residents of New Jersey deserve no less. It is with great pride that we at NJ TRANSIT salute our outstanding bus operators who work so hard every day and are committed to the Corporations goals for excellence. When you think about the millions of miles driven on very congested, rush-hour roads the accomplishment is truly incredible."
