NJ TRANSIT HELPING LOWER MANHATTAN WORKERS RETURN TO THEIR JOBS
Busing Effort to be Coordinated with PATH and Ferry Services; Alternatives to Exchange Place Area also Available
NEWARK, NJ, September 18, 2001 -- NJ TRANSIT has developed a contingency plan to serve commuters traveling to lower Manhattan. The service plan is being closely coordinated with other transportation agencies including private bus carriers, PATH, ferry services and the New York City subway system.
At the request of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, NJ TRANSIT customers who use PATH to Manhattan are asked to continue to PATH’s 33rd Street Station, where they can transfer to the New York City Subway system. Customers can also exit at 9th Street Station and walk to their destination.
The following alternatives are available for lower Manhattan workers:
- Commuters normally traveling on buses between Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex counties to lower Manhattan:
- Take any bus service to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where connecting New York City subway service will be available.
- Take a North Jersey Coast Line or Northeast Corridor train to Newark Penn Station, then take PATH to 9th Street and walk to their destination, or take PATH to 33rd Street and transfer to the New York City Subway.
- Take a North Jersey Coast Line or Northeast Corridor train trains to Penn Station New York and transfer to the New York City subway.

- Commuters who normally travel on Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast or Raritan Valley trains to Newark Penn Station and transfer to PATH:
- Take PATH to 9th Street and walk to their destination, or take PATH to 33rd Street and transfer to the New York City Subway.
- Take North Jersey Coast Line Waterfront Connection trains to Hoboken, then take the New York Waterway ferry to lower Manhattan.

- Commuters who normally take PATH from Hoboken to lower Manhattan:
- Take the New York Waterway ferry from Hoboken to Lower Manhattan.
- Take PATH to 9th Street and walk to their destination, or take PATH to 33rd Street and transfer to the New York City Subway.

- Commuters who normally take Hudson County local bus service to the Hoboken PATH Station for service to lower Manhattan:
- Take the New York Waterway ferry from Hoboken to Lower Manhattan.
- Take PATH to 9th Street and walk to their destination, or take PATH to 33rd Street and transfer to the New York City Subway.

- NJ TRANSIT also has alternatives available for commuters who normally take PATH from Newark or Hoboken to Exchange Place. These customers should:
- Take PATH to Grove Street Station transfer to an NJ TRANSIT bus.
- Take PATH to Grove Street Station and and walk to their destination.
- Take local buses from Hoboken to Exchange Place.
- Take PATH to Pavonia/Newport Station and walk one block to NJ TRANSIT’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.

Customers are reminded that detours may be in effect on Jersey City streets -- especially in the Exchange Place and Journal Square areas -- and bus routes may be affected as a result.
NJ TRANSIT is also taking several steps to ease customers' trips through the end of September. During this time, the Corporation is:
- Cross-honoring bus, rail and light rail passes and tickets, allowing customers to use any NJ TRANSIT bus, train or light rail vehicle to reach their destination.
- Waiving the on-board $3.00 penalty for rail customers who purchase their ticket aboard trains when a ticket agent is present or a working ticket vending machine is available at their departing station.
- Temporarily extending the hours of its customer service offices at Hoboken Terminal, Penn Station New York and Newark Penn Station. The offices will be open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday until the end of September -- three hours later than usual. In addition, NJ TRANSIT customer service representatives will be available at the Port Authority Bus Terminal from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.
