NJ TRANSIT ENHANCES "MY TRANSIT" ALERT SYSTEM TO INCLUDE WEEKEND RAIL ALERTS AND ACCESS LINK UPDATES

NJT-11-008

NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT Executive Director James Weinstein today announced an enhancement to the agency’s ‘My Transit’ alert system that will enable customers to receive weekend rail alerts, as well as alerts for disruptions to Access Link paratransit service.

The My Transit alert system, which launched in June 2001, delivers critical travel information to customers via cell phone, handheld wireless device or email inbox.  Through My Transit, customers are advised of delays, service disruptions, schedule changes and more.

“With the introduction of weekend rail alerts, customers will have the option to register for alerts by line, as many incidental riders who are seeking the information may not necessarily take the same train each time they travel on a Saturday or Sunday,” said Weinstein.  “Receiving weekend alerts by line will give rail travelers the ability to plan accordingly in the event of delays.”

My Transit currently has more than 40,000 active rail customers, who have the ability to request alerts for specific trains on weekdays, since most regular commuters tend to take the same train every day.

On weekends, NJ TRANSIT regularly posts service updates to njtransit.com, but until now there had been no mechanism in place for customers to request weekend email alerts through My Transit.

Executive Director Weinstein also announced that NJ TRANSIT is adding Access Link to the My Transit system, enabling paratransit service customers to receive alerts about disruptions to service in their region.  Access Link customers who subscribe to My Transit will receive an alert if service is disrupted for reasons such as inclement weather, as well as an alert when service to their region is restored.

NJ TRANSIT was the first major transit agency in the country to offer an email alert option for customers.  Since then, the My Transit system has undergone a number of improvements, including adding server capacity to provide faster delivery of delay information and the ability to accommodate more customers.
