NJ TRANSIT TO DETOUR BUSES FOR ESSEX STREET BRIDGE CLOSURE

Service adjustments will be in effect for 144, 164 and 712 lines

NEWARK, NJ ¿ Beginning on or about January 2, 2008, the Essex Street Bridge over Route 17 in Maywood/Rochelle Park will be closed to all traffic for a major reconstruction project that will last until late 2008. During the bridge closure, NJ TRANSIT bus service on the 144, 164 and 712 lines will operate on a detour.

While every attempt will be made to maintain schedules, NJ TRANSIT is advising customers to expect delays due to traffic congestion and to allow extra travel time.

The following service adjustments will be in effect for the duration of the bridge closure:

No. 144 Fair Lawn-Hackensack-New York

Service will operate in two segments, as follows:

  • New "144 Express" service will operate on the normal route through Elmwood Park, Paramus and Saddle Brook via Saddle River Road and Market Street continuing as far as Essex Street/Riverview Avenue in Rochelle Park. Express buses will use I-80 between Rochelle Park and the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT).
  • New "144 Local" service will originate and terminate in Maywood at the intersection of Maywood Avenue/Essex Street. Local buses will operate on their regular route between Maywood and the PABT via Essex Street & Polifly Road.
  • Morning peak period service to Paramus and evening peak period service to New York via Teterboro will begin and end in Maywood instead of Paramus.
  • On weekdays, new 144 midday express service will be implemented between Paramus (Route 4/Red Mill Road) and the PABT via Saddle River Road in Saddle Brook. Service along this segment will operate approximately every two hours.
  • A special schedule is in effect on weekdays until further notice, available on www.njtransit.com.

No. 164 Midland Park ¿ New York

On weekends and off-peak weekdays, local service from Midland Park/Ridgewood to New York will be on a detour route between Saddle River Road/Red Mill Road in Paramus and Maywood Avenue/Essex Street in Maywood. On the detour, buses will travel along Red Mill Road, Passaic Street and Maywood Avenue but will not make passenger stops to minimize delays. Local service from New York to Ridgewood/Midland Park (including Hackensack Express "E" service) will be on a detour route between Essex Street/Maywood Avenue in Maywood and Paramus Road/Route 4 in Paramus. On the detour, buses will travel along Maywood Avenue and Passaic Street but will not make passenger stops to minimize delays.
  • On weekends, there will be no service along the southern portion of Saddle River Road between Route 4 in Paramus and Market Street in Saddle Brook and the portion of Market Street-Essex Street from Saddle River Road in Saddle Brook to Maywood Avenue in Maywood.
  • Selected weekday evening trips from New York to Paramus (Route 4) will operate on the normal route as far as Route 46 in Hasbrouck Heights, then on a detour via Route 46 West, Westminster Place to Market Street in Saddle Brook. On the detour, buses will not make passenger stops to minimize delays. Service will resume the normal route to Paramus at the intersection of Market Street and Saddle River Road. Other trips from New York will end in Maywood at the intersection of Essex Street/Maywood Avenue.
  • There is no change in route or schedule for weekday peak No. 164 Midland Park-Fair Lawn Express trips (SX & SXB).
  • A special schedule is in effect on weekdays until further notice, available on www.njtransit.com.
  • No. 712 Hackensack ¿ Willowbrook Mall

    Buses to and from Hackensack will use a detour route between Market Street/Westminster Place (Saddle Brook) and Summit Avenue/Essex Street (Hackensack). On the detour, buses will travel along Westminster Place, Route 46, Boulevard and Summit Avenue, but will not make passenger stops to minimize delays.
  • For 712 trips operating only between Totowa, Paterson and Saddle Brook, there is no change in route or schedule.
  • No. 709 Bloomfield ¿ Paramus

    Due to expected congestion along the Rochelle Avenue corridor, customers are advised to expect delays.
