NJ TRANSIT TO DETOUR BUSES FOR ESSEX STREET BRIDGE CLOSURE
Service adjustments will be in effect for 144, 164 and 712 lines

NEWARK, NJ ¿ Beginning on or about January 2, 2008, the Essex Street Bridge over Route 17 in Maywood/Rochelle Park will be closed to all traffic for a major reconstruction project that will last until late 2008. During the bridge closure, NJ TRANSIT bus service on the 144, 164 and 712 lines will operate on a detour.
While every attempt will be made to maintain schedules, NJ TRANSIT is advising customers to expect delays due to traffic congestion and to allow extra travel time.
The following service adjustments will be in effect for the duration of the bridge closure:
No. 144 Fair Lawn-Hackensack-New York
Service will operate in two segments, as follows:
- New "144 Express" service will operate on the normal route through Elmwood Park, Paramus and Saddle Brook via Saddle River Road and Market Street continuing as far as Essex Street/Riverview Avenue in Rochelle Park. Express buses will use I-80 between Rochelle Park and the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT).
- New "144 Local" service will originate and terminate in Maywood at the intersection of Maywood Avenue/Essex Street. Local buses will operate on their regular route between Maywood and the PABT via Essex Street & Polifly Road.
- Morning peak period service to Paramus and evening peak period service to New York via Teterboro will begin and end in Maywood instead of Paramus.
- On weekdays, new 144 midday express service will be implemented between Paramus (Route 4/Red Mill Road) and the PABT via Saddle River Road in Saddle Brook. Service along this segment will operate approximately every two hours.
- A special schedule is in effect on weekdays until further notice, available on www.njtransit.com.
