NJ TRANSIT TO CHANGE RAIL SCHEDULES ON JANUARY 13

Peak Period Service to New York Added

NEWARK, NJ, January 8, 2002 -- NJ TRANSIT will change some of its rail schedules on January 13. The Corporation regularly revises its schedules to address changing travel patterns.

NJ TRANSIT will add four MidTOWN DIRECT trains between Summit and New York (three during the morning peak period and one in the afternoon peak period), revise its Northeast Corridor (NEC) morning peak period express service, add two NEC trains (a morning peak period local to New York and an evening peak period express train from New York) and extend two North Jersey Coast Line trains to Hoboken.

"The September 11 attacks radically changed New Jersey’s commuting patterns," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Jeffrey A. Warsh. "The service plan we will implement January 13 will add seats for some customers traveling between New Jersey and New York -- where ridership has increased by more than 10,000 trips during the morning peak period -- while speeding the trip for others."

Approximately 43,900 NJ TRANSIT customers use Penn Station New York between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. each weekday, down from a high of 48,500 in October but still far above pre-September 11 levels (33,700).

Customers should obtain new timetables -- dated January 13 --and check them carefully. Customers should also check schedules for details regarding service on Martin Luther King Day (January 21) and Presidents’ Day (February 18). NJ TRANSIT trains will operate on enhanced Saturday schedules those days and service will be available on the Boonton and Pascack Valley lines, which normally do not operate on weekends and holidays.

There will be minor changes on the Boonton, Bergen County and Main lines on January 13. There will be NO changes on the Atlantic City, Montclair, Pascack Valley, Port Jervis and Raritan Valley lines. However, Raritan Valley Line customers should check new timetables carefully to determine if their New York connections have changed.
