NJ TRANSIT CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF RAIL SERVICE WITH HERITAGE TRAIN DISPLAY
Public Invited to View Iconic Locomotives in Color Schemes of Predecessor Railroads
September 26, 2023
HOBOKEN, NJ – As part of NJ TRANSIT’s 40th anniversary of rail operations, the public is invited to historic Hoboken Terminal to view some of the agency’s iconic heritage locomotives and celebrate the rich railroad history of New Jersey this Sunday, October 1st. The event is free of charge and will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m near Track 17.
Take a stroll down memory lane with locomotives decked out in historical liveries of predecessor railroads. A recruiting table will also be available to those interested in joining NJ TRANSIT’s ranks. In addition, the 2023 Hoboken Music and Arts Festival will be taking place nearby along Washington Street.
Sunday’s event will culminate a weekend of celebration. One day earlier, on Saturday, September 30th, NJ TRANSIT will partner with the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey to run the “40th Anniversary Express,” a special historic excursion train. The train will depart Penn Station New York in the morning and conclude at Hoboken Terminal in the late afternoon.
Alongside several NJ TRANSIT coaches, on that excursion, will be four historic railroad cars: the URHS’ Hickory Creek and Tavern-Lounge No. 43, together with Juniata Terminal Company’s Warrior Ridge and Pennsylvania Railroad No. 120.
Proceeds from this excursion will support the non-profit United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey. Tickets to the excursion are sold out, but railfans are welcome to (safely) take pictures of this special train along its route.
Earlier this month, at the September Board of Directors meeting, NJ TRANSIT recognized the “Forty Year Club” – a group of 30 longtime employees – with a proclamation recognizing their 40-plus years of service to the agency and its predecessor railroads.
