NJ TRANSIT ADJUSTS BUS SCHEDULES TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE

NEWARK, NJ, March 26, 2002 -- NJ TRANSIT will revise schedules on a number of bus lines on Saturday, April 6 in response to changing travel patterns, as well as customer requests and recommendations. The Corporation regularly reviews its bus routes and makes changes to improve service.

Passenger boarding locations at Newark Penn Station will change for many bus routes beginning with the April 6 bus schedule changes. Customers should check timetables dated April 2002 and passenger informational notices in the bus lanes at the station to determine whether their bus boarding locations are changing.

NJ TRANSIT will also be implementing a fare increase beginning April 1. Customers are encouraged to pick up new timetables at major terminals and on their buses and check them carefully to determine new fares and specific trip change information.

Following are highlights of the April 6 bus schedule changes:

Atlantic County

  • On the No. 319 New York-Atlantic City-Cape May route, weekday service to Jersey City will be extended beyond Journal Square to begin/end at Exchange Place. Two nightly local shuttle trips departing from Wildwood and Atlantic City will be eliminated due to low ridership and an evening trip from Atlantic City will no longer stop in Newark enroute to New York due to low ridership.
  • Minor changes will occur on the No. 502 Atlantic City-Hamilton Mall-Atlantic/Cape Community College route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • Overnight service on the No. 505 Atlantic City-Margate-Longport route between Margate and Longport will be reduced from nine round trips to five roundtrips due to low ridership and municipal requests.
  • On the No. 551 Philadelphia-Atlantic City-Ocean City route, an afternoon express trip from Philadelphia to Avandale will be added to relieve overcrowding. Three evening and overnight trips will be eliminated due to low ridership. Overnight trip times will be adjusted.
  • Minor changes will occur on the No. 553 Upper Deerfield-Atlantic City route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Bergen County

  • On the No. 144 Fair Lawn-Hackensack-New York route, inbound p.m. service to the Meadowlands Sports Complex will be replaced by the No. 164 Midland Park-New York route.
  • On the No. 163 Ridgewood-New York route, all a.m. Parkway Express "P" trips will be five minutes earlier and one morning trip from New York will be extended from Arcola to Ridgewood Terminal.
  • On the No. 165 Westwood-New York route, there will be p.m. peak outbound service adjustments on Turnpike Express and Route 4 services between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will also be added p.m. peak outbound Parkway Express service between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
  • Minor changes will be made on the No. 160 Elmwood Park-New York, No. 166 Dumont-Tenafly-New York and No.167 Harrington Park-New York routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Burlington County

  • Minor adjustments will be made to the No. 409 Trenton-Willingboro-Philadelphia route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Camden County

  • On the No. 403 Turnersville-Lindenwold-Philadelphia route, service will be extended to serve Wal-Mart in Washington Township on County Route 555 on an hourly basis, and most service will be removed from Winslow Plaza shopping center due to low ridership. An a.m. trip to Philadelphia will be discontinued due to low ridership.
  • Minor adjustments will be made on the No. 450 Camden-Audubon-Cherry Hill route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Cape May County

  • Minor changes will be made on the No. 313/315 Philadelphia-Wildwood-Cape May route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Cumberland County

  • Minor changes will be made on the No. 408 Millville-Philadelphia route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Essex County

  • Minor changes will occur on the weekday No. 1 Newark and No. 70 Newark-Livingston Mall routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • The No. 73 Newark-Orange-Livingston Mall route will experience minor adjustments on the Sunday schedule. Customer should check their timetables carefully.
  • Additional service will be offered on the No. 191 Willowbrook-Little Falls-New York route to Montclair Heights via Allwood Road Park/Ride during the p.m. rush hour. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • Minor adjustments will occur on the No. 195 Willowbrook-Cedar Grove-New York route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Gloucester County

  • Minor changes will occur on the No. 463 Woodbury-Avandale route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • On the No. 403 Turnersville-Lindenwold-Philadelphia route, service will be extended to serve Wal-Mart in Washington Township on County Route 555 on an hourly basis, and most service will be removed from Winslow Plaza shopping center due to low ridership. Hudson County

  • On the No. 64 Lakewood-Jersey City-Weehawken route, the route in Jersey City between Newport and Journal Square will be adjusted with added bus stops. Two early a.m. trips will be eliminated due to low ridership.
  • Service on the No. 188 River Road-New York route to the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal in Weehawken will be discontinued due to local bridge construction. The 188 route will return to its former route via 60th street and Hillside Avenue to/from River Road. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • The No. 120 Bayonne-Lower Manhattan route will have a revised weekday morning schedule, including an additional trip for customer convenience.

Mercer County

  • Minor changes will occur on the No. 409 Trenton-Willingboro-Philadelphia route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • The No. 600 Trenton-Plainsboro route and schedule will be adjusted to reflect the new road configuration with Meadow Road construction complete.

Middlesex County

  • On the No. 64 Lakewood-Jersey City-Weehawken route, the route in Jersey City between Newport and Journal Square will be adjusted with added bus stops. Two early a.m. trips will be eliminated due to low ridership.
  • Weekday morning peak period schedules will be revised on the following routes: No. 113 Dunellen-New York, No. 114 Bridgewater-New York, and No. 116 Perth Amboy-New York.
  • On the No. 139 Lakewood-New York route, a.m. and p.m. service has been slightly reduced due to declines in ridership. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Monmouth County

  • On the No. 64 Lakewood-Jersey City-Weehawken route, the route in Jersey City between Newport and Journal Square will be adjusted with added bus stops. Two early a.m. trips will be eliminated due to low ridership.
  • On the No. 139 Lakewood-New York route, a.m. and p.m. service has been slightly reduced due to declines in ridership. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • Daily service on the No. 307 Freehold-Six Flags route between Freehold Center, Jackson Outlet Village and Six Flags Great Adventure will resume operation on March 29.
  • There will be minor adjustments on the No. 833 Red Bank-Freehold and No. 834 Red Bank-Highlands routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.

Ocean County

  • On the No. 64 Lakewood-Jersey City-Weehawken route, the route in Jersey City between Newport and Journal Square will be adjusted with added bus stops. Two early a.m. trips will be eliminated due to low ridership.
  • On the No. 139 Lakewood-New York route, a.m. and p.m. service has been slightly reduced due to declines in ridership. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • Daily service on the No. 307 Freehold-Six Flags route between Freehold Center, Jackson Outlet Village and Six Flags Great Adventure will resume operation on March 29.
  • Daily service on the No. 309 Toms River-Lakewood-Six Flags route between Toms River Bus Terminal, Lakewood Bus Terminal, Cassville, Jackson Outlet Village and Six Flags Great Adventure will begin operating on March 29.

Passaic County

  • A new branch of the No. 161 Paterson-Passaic-New York route has been created to serve the commercial areas of Commerce Avenue, Central Boulevard and Empire Boulevard in Carlstadt and South Hackensack. Service will operate on this branch on weekdays only during peak and off-peak periods. Customers should check timetables for service information.
  • There will be minor adjustments on the No. 191 Willowbrook-Little Falls-New York, No. 192 Clifton-New York and No. 193 Pompton Lakes-Packanack Lake-Willowbrook-New York routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully for specific changes.

Somerset County

  • The weekday morning peak period schedule will be adjusted on the No. 114 Bridgewater-New York and No. 117 Somerville-New York routes.

Union County

  • On the No. 114 Bridgewater-New York and No. 117 Somerville-New York routes, the weekday morning peak period trips will be completely revised. In addition, a new No. 114 local trip from New York to Scotch Plains will leave the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 3:45 p.m. There will be minor revisions to the Sunday schedule from New York. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • On the No. 112 Clark-New York route, there will be a number of changes to the weekday afternoon and early evening schedule. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
  • On the No. 113 Dunellen-New York Express route, there will be minor changes to the weekday morning schedule.
