NJ TRANSIT TO ADJUST SCHEDULES FOR MEMORIAL DAY
Pony Express and Expanded Summer Schedule Featured
NEWARK, NJ, May 22, 2002 -- NJ TRANSIT trains will operate on a Sunday schedule on Memorial Day -- Monday, May 27. Many NJ TRANSIT buses will also operate on a Sunday schedule. However, some routes that operate to malls and major shopping areas will follow Saturday schedules. Customers should check their timetables for exact information on Memorial Day service. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line will follow a weekend schedule on Memorial Day. The Newark City Subway will follow a Sunday schedule using Light Rail Vehicles on Memorial Day, May 27. Substitute bus service will operate on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26.
"Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the summer season," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director George D. Warrington. "New Jersey's beaches and shore attractions are among our most popular summer destinations. Our goal is to help start our customers' weekends off right by providing early getaway service and additional summer service beginning Friday afternoon."
On Friday, May 24, NJ TRANSIT will operate early getaway trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast and Raritan Valley lines. Additional bus service will also be operated from the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
GETAWAY SERVICE ON FRIDAY, MAY 24
Rail
- On the Northeast Corridor, train 8847 will depart Newark Penn Station at 2:09 p.m., stopping at Newark International Airport, operating express to Metropark and then making all stops to Trenton, arriving there at 3:09 p.m.
- On the North Jersey Coast Line, train 8301 will depart Newark Penn Station at 3:45 p.m., operate express to Woodbridge, and make all stops to Bay Head, arriving there at 5:40 p.m.
- On the Raritan Valley Line:
- Train 5425, the 1:06 p.m. departure out of Newark Penn Station, will be extended to High Bridge, making all stops.
- Train 8529 will depart Newark Penn Station at 3:32 p.m. and make all stops to Raritan, arriving there at 4:29 p.m.
- Train 5711, the 6:23 p.m. departure from Newark Penn Station, will be combined with train 5903. The combined train will depart Newark at 6:29 p.m. and make all stops to High Bridge.
Bus
- Additional service will be provided on a number of bus routes leaving the Port Authority Bus Terminal between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., depending on customer demand.
Beginning on Saturday, May 25, weekend service will be extended to Seaside Park on the No. 67 bus route. On weekends and holidays, a morning bus will depart Jersey City's Journal Square Transportation Center at 9:22 a.m. and Newark Penn Station at 9:45 a.m., arriving in Seaside Heights at 11:38 a.m. and Seaside Park at 11:43 a.m. Return service will depart Seaside Park at 5:20 p.m. and Seaside Heights at 5:25 p.m. arriving at Newark Penn Station at 7:14 p.m. and Jersey City's Journal Square Transportation Center at 7:37 p.m.
MONMOUTH PARK SERVICE
- The Pony Express Train will operate on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Sunday, September 1. For customer convenience, the Pony Express fare includes Grandstand admission. Daily service to Monmouth Park is also available. This service will not operate on Labor Day, Monday, September 2.
- Train 2397, the Pony Express, will depart Hoboken at 11:10 a.m., stop in Newark, Elizabeth, Rahway, Perth Amboy and South Amboy, and arrive at Monmouth Park at 12:25 p.m. in time for the first race at 1:00 p.m.
- The return Pony Express trip will depart Monmouth Park 20 minutes after the final race and make the same stops as the train listed above.
- Long Branch-bound trains 7229, 7233, 7237, 7241, 7253 and 7257 will make an additional stop at Monmouth Park approximately three minutes after the train departs Little Silver. Customers should check their timetables for details.
- New York-bound trains 7232, 7236, 7240, 7252, 7256 and 7260 will make an additional stop at Monmouth Park approximately three minutes after the train departs Long Branch. Customers should check their timetables for details.
SUMMER SHORE SERVICE:
Outbound Trains
- On Saturdays and July 4 only, train 7227 will depart New York at 9:11 a.m. After stopping in Newark, it will operate express to Long Branch, arriving there at 10:17 a.m. Passengers can connect with train 4727, departing Long Branch 10:20 a.m. and making all stops to Bay Head except Elberon and Allenhurst.
- On weekends and holidays, train 2395 will depart Hoboken at 10:10 a.m. After stopping in Newark, it will operate express to Long Branch, then make all stops to Bay Head except Elberon and Allenhurst. It will arrive in Bay Head at 12:01 p.m.
- On weekends and holidays, train 2399 will depart Hoboken at 9:40 p.m. After stopping in Newark, it will operate express to Woodbridge and then make all stops to Bay Head, where it will arrive at 11:51 p.m. This train will serve as a Bay Head connection for customers using train 7277, which departs New York at 9:24 p.m. and makes all stops to Long Branch.
Inbound Trains
- On Sundays and holidays (except July 4) only, train 4762 will depart Bay Head at 7:03 p.m. and make all stops to Long Branch except Allenhurst and Elberon. After arriving in Long Branch at 7:40 p.m., customers can transfer to train 7262, which will depart Long Branch at 7:46 p.m. and operate express to Newark and New York only, arriving in New York at 8:58 p.m. To accommodate this service, train 4764, which departs Bay Head at 7:27 p.m., will operate on Saturdays and July 4 only.
- On Sundays and holidays only, train 2398 will depart Bay Head at 8:25 p.m., make all stops to Long Branch except Allenhurst and Elberon, then operate express to Newark and Hoboken only. It will arrive in Hoboken at 10:20 p.m.
- On weekends and holidays, train 2390 will depart Bay Head at 6:27 a.m., make all stops to Aberdeen-Matawan except Monmouth Park and Hazlet, then operate express to Newark and Hoboken. It will arrive in Hoboken at 8:19 a.m.
- On weekends and holidays, train 2394 will depart Bay Head at 5:54 p.m., make all stops to Monmouth Park except Allenhurst and Elberon, then operate express to Newark and Hoboken. It will arrive in Hoboken at 7:43 p.m.
NJ TRANSIT's bus and rail Weekend Family Super Saver Fare, which allows two children 11 and under to travel free with each fare-paying adult, will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday, May 24 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.
