NJ TRANSIT ADDS TEMPORARY PEAK PERIOD BUSING AT SELECT RIVER LINE STATIONS TO ENHANCE SERVICE OPTIONS
River LINE Light Rail Vehicles Will Operate with Supplemental Bus Service At Six Stations On Weekdays During Morning And Afternoon Peak Hours
August 9, 2024
CAMDEN, NJ – Following a visit yesterday to the River LINE maintenance facility in Camden by NJ TRANSIT’s President & CEO, NJ TRANSIT is introducing an enhanced, interim River LINE weekday schedule that will go into effect Monday, August 12, 2024, and adds supplemental bus service at six high ridership stations to provide customers with additional travel options during weekday morning and afternoon peak hours (6:00 a.m.- 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.).
NJ TRANSIT is enacting this temporary schedule to provide a more consistent, predictable, and reliable schedule for customers while allowing time for delivery of custom replacement auxiliary power units (APUs) for the light rail vehicles. The River LINE light rail vehicles are one-of-a-kind models that were custom-built more than 20 years ago to share the tracks with Conrail freight trains. The delivery of needed custom replacement APUs has been delayed longer than anticipated because of manufacturing and supply chain issues.
"The recent performance on the River LINE has not been acceptable and we apologize to our customers for their experience," said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. "This interim measure is part of a broader long-term commitment and action plan that continues holding our contract operator accountable to make the necessary vehicle upgrades and restore the reliable and predictable service our customers expect and deserve."
On weekdays beginning Monday, August 12th, the River LINE will continue to operate every 30 minutes from all stations throughout the service day, with supplemental buses operated by Academy Bus Company during the morning and afternoon peak periods at the following six stations to offer additional travel options: Trenton, Florence, Burlington Towne Center, Riverside, Palmyra, and Walter Rand Transportation Center. The buses will stop at only the six stations listed and will not serve intermediate stations. Customers with an origin or destination of a station not served by a bus will be accommodated by the next light rail train.

NJ TRANSIT recognizes that recent River LINE service has not met the expectations of our customers, and we remain committed to restoring consistent and reliable weekday service on the River LINE as quickly as possible. We are working every day to resolve the equipment issues with our contractor to deliver the service our customers expect and deserve.
