NJ TRANSIT ADDS 28 NEW WEEKDAY TRAINS

2,000 new peak-period seats on NEC with April 24 timetable change

NEWARK, NJ ¿ NJ TRANSIT will add 28 new trains as part of its spring timetable change, which takes effect Sunday, April 24. With the change, customers on the Northeast Corridor will benefit from a major effort to alleviate crowding on peak-period trains. The schedule includes a new morning peak train and a new evening peak train, providing approximately 2,000 more seats to address crowding conditions on the system¿s busiest line.

In addition, a number of schedule improvements were made based on customer requests, including new express service from the Montclair State University (MSU) and Ramsey/Route 17 stations. Main/Bergen County Line customers will find more midday service between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., with two trains per hour in each direction serving Suffern, Ramsey/Route 17 and Ridgewood, as well as hourly service on each of the two branches.

The following is a summary of schedule changes by line:

Northeast Corridor: 2,000 new seats in the peak; 2,000 more in the off-peak

  • To relieve crowding conditions on morning peak-period Train 3824, the most severely crowded train on the system, NJ TRANSIT will add a new express train with 1,000 seats during the morning peak period. The new train, number 3922, will depart Trenton at 6:50 a.m., make stops at Hamilton, Princeton Junction, and Newark, and arrive in New York at 7:59 a.m.
  • With the addition of Train 3922, existing Train 3822 (currently the 6:57 a.m. departure from Hamilton) will now begin service at Metuchen Station(where it will depart at 7:18 a.m.), to make seating available for Metuchen and Metropark customers.

  • In addition, existing Train 3824 (currently the 6:57 a.m. departure from Trenton) will now begin service at New Brunswick Station (where it will depart at 7:27 a.m.), to make seating available for customers from New Brunswick to Metropark stations.

  • To relieve overcrowding on existing afternoon trains, a new train¿number 3865¿will depart New York at 4:54 p.m. and operate from New York to Trenton (express from Newark to Metropark). The train will add approximately 1,000 seats of Northeast Corridor capacity during the afternoon peak period.

  • New reverse peak Train 3899 will depart New York at 7:53 a.m. and stop at Newark Liberty International Airport, New Brunswick, and Metropark.

  • New Train 3949 will depart New York at 2:01 p.m., stop at Newark Penn Station, operate express to Princeton Junction, and arrive in Trenton at 3:11 p.m.

Main-Bergen County lines: Midday service doubled between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • NJ TRANSIT will double service between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the Main/Bergen County Line, offering two trains per hour in each direction at Suffern, Ramsey/Route 17 and Ridgewood, as well as hourly service on each of the two branches.
  • Two additional morning peak-period express trains from Suffern will now serve Ramsey/Route 17 to provide enhanced travel options for customers:

    • Train 1102 will depart Ramsey Route 17 Station at 5:56 a.m., stop at Secaucus Junction at 6:26 a.m., and arrive at Hoboken at 6:38 a.m., shaving 17 minutes off of the regular travel time between Ramsey 17 and Hoboken.

    • Train 1104 will depart Ramsey Route 17 Station at 8:11 a.m., stop at Secaucus Junction at 8:45 a.m., and arrive at Hoboken at 8:57 a.m., shaving six minutes off of the regular travel time.

Montclair-Boonton Line: 7 new trains to serve Montclair State University Station

  • Four new inbound trains (to Hoboken/New York) and three new outbound trains (to Dover/Hackettstown) will be added to enhance travel options at Montclair State University (MSU) Station:

    • A morning express train¿number 1002¿will depart MSU Station at 7:56 a.m. and arrive in Hoboken at 8:28 a.m., shaving approximately 15 minutes off the regular travel time.

    • A new afternoon express train¿number 1003¿will depart Hoboken at 3:47 p.m., stop at Newark Broad Street Station at 4:03 p.m., and arrive at MSU Station at 4:18 p.m., shaving 15 minutes off the regular travel time.

    • A new train¿number 1061¿will depart Hoboken at 10:04 p.m., arrive at Newark Broad Street at 10:20 p.m. and MSU Station at 10:35 p.m., shaving 14 minutes off the regular travel time.

    • A new late night train will depart MSU at 11:07 p.m. and arrive in Hoboken at 11:51 p.m.
  • New Train 294 will depart Watchung Avenue at 8:09 a.m., stop at Bay Street and Newark Broad Street stations, and arrive in Hoboken at 8:42 a.m.

  • Customers who travel from stations west of Montclair will now benefit from quicker trip times during the afternoon and evening.

Morris & Essex Lines: 2,500 seats added with new weekday trains

  • Two new weekday evening trains will be added to fill a gap in service: Train 6668, a 6:21 p.m. departure from Dover to New York, and Train 884, an 8:05 p.m. departure from Hackettstown to Hoboken.

  • A new weekday morning train¿number 605¿will provide morning reverse-peak service from Hoboken to Dover. The train will depart Hoboken at 6:13 a.m. and make all stops to Dover. (The current Train 605, the 6:37 a.m. departure from Hoboken, will be renumbered as Train 607.)

  • A new weekday mid-morning train from Summit¿Train 6332¿will be added to allow for an earlier arrival into New York for Gladstone Branch customers while alleviating crowding.

North Jersey Coast Line: Earlier service in the morning, later service at night

  • Westbound service on the North Jersey Coast Line will begin one hour earlier with the addition of Train 3209, which will depart New York at 4:44 a.m. and make all local stops to Long Branch.

  • Weekday service between Long Branch and Bay Head will be extended one hour later. The last train from Long Branch to Bay Head will now depart Long Branch at 3:17 a.m., seven days a week.

Raritan Valley Line: New service splits 71-minute westbound gap

For the benefit off-peak reverse commuters, new Train 5417 will depart Newark Penn Station at 9:27 a.m. and make local stops except Garwood and Finderne before arriving in Raritan at 10:21 a.m.

IMPORTANT CUSTOMER NOTE: Minor schedule changes have been made to several NJ TRANSIT trains to accommodate the improvements outlined above. Customers are advised to carefully check new timetables, which are available at major stations and online at www.njtransit.com, for changes that may affect their itinerary.
