NEW NJ TRANSIT BUS SCHEDULES TAKE EFFECT JUNE 27

Systemwide changes include customer-requested route adjustments and summer service to the Jersey Shore and other destinations

NEWARK, NJ — Customers will benefit from improvements to several high-volume bus routes, seasonal “early getaway” service and express trips to popular Jersey Shore destinations in systemwide bus schedule adjustments that take effect Saturday, June 27.

 

“Our on-going bus studies in high-ridership corridors, including Newark and Jersey City, are already paying dividends to our customers with several service and route adjustments which we’ve incorporated into the new bus schedules,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Richard Sarles.  “In addition, we’re making seasonal adjustments to help our customers enjoy the Jersey Shore and other attractions throughout the state.”

 

In Newark, the No. 39 route is being split into two routes – the 39 and the 30 – to provide more service to customers traveling to and from Newark Penn Station and to improve reliability.  The new 30 route will serve customers traveling to and from North Arlington, Kearny, Harrison and Newark.

 

A new branch of the No. 6 route in Jersey City will connect the Lafayette neighborhood and a section of Garfield Avenue with the Journal Square area in Jersey City.  Named the Lafayette Loop, it addresses a service gap identified in NJ TRANSIT’s Jersey City Bus Study that is currently being completed. 

And for the first time in 30 years, NJ TRANSIT will provide direct bus service to five blocks of Asbury Park’s beach and boardwalk, with reconfigured 832 and 837 routes providing customers two new sets of bus stops along Ocean Avenue.

Following are highlights of county-by-county changes effective June 27, 2009:

 

Atlantic County

  • 551 Philadelphia-Atlantic City:  Buses will operate more frequently during mid-day hours through the summer with service every 30 minutes.

Bergen County

  • 76 Hackensack-Newark:  On Sundays one additional trip will be added between 7:10 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. to Hackensack.

  • 163 Ridgewood-New York:  Additional summer “early getaway” trips will operate Fridays only from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 1:30, 2:30, 3:10 and 3:50 p.m.

  • 164 Midland Park-New York:  Additional summer  “early getaway” trips will operate Fridays only from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 12:50, 1:50 and 2:50 p.m.
  • 165 Westwood-New York:  An additional summer “early getaway” trip will operate Fridays only from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 3:15 p.m.
     
  • 166 Dumont-Tenafly-New York:  Additional summer “early getaway” trips will operate Fridays only from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 2:00 and 3:50 p.m.

  • 192 Clifton-New York:  Additional summer “early getaway” trips will operate Fridays only from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 1:40, 2:40, 3:10, 3:30 and 4:40 p.m.

Camden County 

  •  318 Philadelphia-Six Flags Great Adventure: Additional trips will be provided on Fridays, and buses will depart the park later on Saturdays.     
    Cape May County

Cape May County 

  • 316 Philadelphia-Wildwood-Cape May Express:  Service on this seasonal line resumes through Labor Day.

  • 319 New York-Atlantic City-Cape May:  Service will be extended beyond Wildwood to Cape May daily through Labor Day.

Essex County

  • 30 N. Arlington-Kearny-Newark:  This new route will serve the bus stops in North Arlington, Kearny and Harrison previously served by the No. 39 bus, and also will serve selected stops along Broad Street in Newark.  On weekdays until 6 p.m., buses operating from North Arlington will terminate at Lincoln Park in Newark.  After 6 p.m. weekdays and on weekends, service will operate to and from Newark Penn Station instead of Lincoln Park.
  • 39 Irvington-Newark Penn Station:  This reconfigured route will serve all the same stops between Irvington and Newark Penn Station, and will provide customers greater reliability and more service to Newark Penn Station. 39X trips will continue to operate to/from Washington Park in Newark.
  • 76 Hackensack-Newark:  On Sundays one additional trip will be added between 7:10 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. to Hackensack.

Hudson County

  • 6 Lafayette Loop:  A new branch of the No. 6 Ocean Avenue-Journal Square route will start Monday, June 29, connecting  the Lafayette neighborhood and a section of Garfield Avenue with Journal Square, county government offices and two station on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line.  Service will operate weekdays 6 a.m.-7 p.m. with four trips per hour during peak periods and every 30 minutes off-peak.

Middlesex County

  • 980 New Brunswick-Piscataway:  Schedule will be adjusted July 13 to better coordinate with rail service at New Brunswick Station and route is being adjusted to serve Colgate Global Technology Center and Corporate Place South in Piscataway.

Monmouth County

  • 832 Red Bank-Monmouth Mall-Asbury Park:  Service is being restored to five Ocean Avenue blocks along the beach and boardwalk, with a pair of new bus stops at Cookman and Asbury avenues and Ocean and Fourth avenues.  Service operates approximately every 30 minutes during the day Monday-Saturday and hourly after 6 .m.  Service operates hourly on Sundays.
  • 837 Long Branch-Asbury Park-Seaview Square Mall:  Service is being restored to five Ocean Avenue blocks along the beach and boardwalk, with a pair of new bus stops at Cookman and Asbury avenues and Ocean and Fourth avenues.  Service operates hourly Monday-Saturday.

Ocean County

  • 67 Toms River-Lakewood-Newark:  Daily “Seaside Express” service resumes for the summer season to and from Jersey City, Newark, Newark International Airport and Toms River.  Enhanced service on the 319 route replaces 67 Express service between Toms River and Newark/Jersey City for the summer.

  • 137 Toms River-New York:  Weekday morning and evening Parkway Express trips will be extended to Seaside Heights, with weekend trips extending to Island Beach State Park upon customer request.

  • 319 New York-Atlantic City-Cape May:  Service will be extended beyond Wildwood to Cape May daily through Labor Day, and several trips will be added to the schedule for the summer.

Passaic County

  • 192 Clifton-New York:  Additional summer “early getaway” trips will operate Fridays only from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 1:40, 2:40, 3:10, 3:30 and 4:40 p.m.

  • 193 Packanack Lake-Willowbrook-New York:  Additional summer “early getaway” trips will operate Fridays only departing Port Authority Bus Terminal at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. to Wayne Willowbrook Park & Ride.  Two additional trips departing PABT at 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. will operate to Wayne Willowbrook Park & Ride and to Willowbrook Mall Shopper’s Stop.

  • 197 Warwick-Wayne-New York:  An additional late morning weekday  trip will be added for the summer from Pompton Lakes to New York via Willowbrook.

  • 324 Wayne/Route 23 Transit Center-New York Express:  An additional summer “early getaway” trip will operate Fridays only from Port Authority Bus Terminal at 3:40 p.m., serving the Wayne/Route 23 Transit Center and Mothers Park & Ride.


Somerset County

  • 884 Somerville-Clinton:  Schedule adjustments will be made starting July 13 to provide better connections to transit buses in Somerville.


Union County

  • 986 Summit-Plainfield:  Schedule adjustment will be made starting July 13 to better meet the needs of employees at Connell Corporate Center in Berkeley Heights.
