NEWARK, NJ ' NJ TRANSIT will offer "early getaway" rail and bus service on Wednesday, November 26 for the benefit of customers leaving work early for the Thanksgiving holiday, as well as extra trains on Thursday, November 27 to accommodate customers traveling to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

On Friday, November 28, traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year, additional trains will operate to New York and enhanced bus service will be offered to shopping centers throughout New Jersey.

On Wednesday, November 26, trains will operate on a weekday schedule on all lines (Friday schedule on Atlantic City Rail Line) with additional "early getaway" service from New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal starting at noon on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex, Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines. Newark Light Rail, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and River LINE will operate on a weekday schedule. Buses will operate on a weekday schedule, with additional buses providing early getaway service on select routes from the Port Authority Bus Terminal starting around 1 p.m.

In addition to the early getaway train listed in Northeast Corridor timetables (the 2:26 p.m. departure from New York), two additional early getaway trains will operate that are not shown in printed schedules:

 

  • Train 8847 will depart New York at 1:32 p.m., making stops at Secaucus, Newark Penn, Newark Liberty International Airport, Metropark, Metuchen, Edison, New Brunswick, Jersey Avenue, Princeton Junction, Hamilton and Trenton.
  • Train 8855 will depart New York at 3:25 p.m., making stops at Secaucus, Newark Penn Station, Newark Liberty International Airport, followed by New Brunswick and all stops thereafter to Trenton. (This train does not have a Princeton Shuttle connection.)

North Jersey Coast Line early getaway Train 8301, shown in timetables as originating at Newark Penn Station, will originate at Hoboken Terminal, where it will depart at 3:15 p.m. After departing Hoboken, this train will operate on the schedule shown in timetables.

To accommodate early getaway service, the following trains will not operate on November 26:

 

  • North Jersey Coast Line train 2311, the 5:46 p.m. departure from Hoboken.
    • Customers traveling from Hoboken may use train 2313, the 6:19 p.m. departure from Hoboken.
    • Customers who use train 2311 to travel to points south of Long Branch (to Bay Head) will have a shuttle train connection departing Long Branch at 7:10 p.m. The shuttle train will operate on train 2311�s schedule from Long Branch to Bay Head only.
  • Pascack Valley Line train 1633, the 5:55 p.m. departure from Hoboken.
  • Port Jervis Line train 59, the 6:08 p.m. departure from Hoboken.
  • Northeast Corridor trains 3173 and 3973 will be combined. The combined train will depart New York at 6:13 p.m. and cover the same stops as 3173 and 3973.

Extra service to Newark Liberty International Airport

Also on Wednesday, November 26, NJ TRANSIT will offer additional service to Newark Liberty International Airport from New York and Newark to accommodate Thanksgiving holiday travel. Eight westbound Northeast Corridor trains will add a stop at Newark Liberty International Airport Station as follows (these stops are not printed in timetables):

 

  • Train 8847, the 1:32 p.m. early getaway departure from New York, will arrive at Newark Airport at 1:56 p.m.
  • Train 8855, the 3:25 p.m. early getaway departure from New York, will arrive at Newark Airport at 3:51 p.m.
  • Train 3721, the 4:07 p.m. departure from New York to Trenton, will arrive at Newark Airport at 4:33 p.m.
  • Train 3165, the 4:54 p.m. departure from New York to Trenton, will arrive at Newark Airport at 5:15 p.m.
  • Train 3725, the 5:12 p.m. departure from New York to Jersey Avenue, will arrive at Newark Airport at 5:38 p.m.
  • Train 3867, the 5:22 p.m. departure from New York to Trenton, will arrive at Newark Airport at 5:46 p.m.
  • Train 3875, the 6:47 p.m. departure from New York to Trenton, will arrive at Newark Airport at 7:11 p.m.
  • Train 3979, the 7:30 p.m. departure from New York to Trenton, will arrive at Newark Airport at 7:53 p.m.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule (Sunday schedule on Atlantic City Rail Line), with no rail service on the Montclair-Boonton Line. To accommodate customers traveling to and from the Macy�s Thanksgiving Day Parade, NJ TRANSIT will add extra trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex and Port Jervis lines. Newark Light Rail and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on weekend schedule; River LINE will operate on a Sunday schedule. On the Northeast Corridor, additional trains (not shown in timetables) will operate in the morning and early afternoon hours to accommodate higher ridership:

 

  • Traveling inbound (to New York): Several "advance trains" will operate 5-10 minutes ahead of selected regularly scheduled trains to provide additional seating capacity. Customers traveling to Newark and New York are encouraged to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to departure.
  • Traveling outbound (from New York): In addition to the weekend/major holiday schedule, eight additional trains will depart New York between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
    • Train 8819 will depart New York at 9:03 a.m., making stops at Newark Penn Station, Newark Liberty International Airport, Metropark, New Brunswick, Princeton Junction, Hamilton and Trenton. This train does not have a scheduled Princeton Shuttle (Dinky) connection.
    • Train 8823 will depart New York at 10:01 a.m., making stops at Newark Penn Station, Newark Liberty International Airport, Metropark, New Brunswick, Princeton Junction, Hamilton and Trenton.
    • Train 8827 will depart New York at 10:56 a.m., making stops at Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, Newark Liberty International Airport, Rahway, Metropark, Metuchen, Edison, New Brunswick, Princeton Junction, Hamilton, Princeton Junction and Trenton.
    • Train 8829 will depart New York at 11:24 a.m., making all local stops on the Northeast Corridor except North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue.
    • Train 8831 will depart New York at 12:01 p.m., making stops at Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, Newark Liberty International Airport, Rahway, Metropark, Metuchen, Edison, New Brunswick, Princeton Junction, Hamilton, Princeton Junction and Trenton.
    • Train 8833 will depart New York at 12:24 p.m., making all local stops on the Northeast Corridor except North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue.
    • Train 8835 will depart New York at 12:39 p.m., making all local stops on the Northeast Corridor except North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue.
    • Train 8837 will depart New York at 1:35 p.m., making all local stops on the Northeast Corridor except North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue. This train does not have a scheduled Princeton Shuttle (Dinky) connection.

On Friday, November 28, one of the busiest shopping days of the year, trains will operate on a weekday schedule on all rail lines with additional New York-bound trains between 10 a.m. and noon on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast and Morris & Essex lines. Newark Light Rail and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend schedule; River LINE will operate on a Sunday schedule. In addition, "early getaway" service will operate on the Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines on Friday, November 28. The following information on extra service is not printed in timetables:

 

  • An additional Pascack Valley Line train will depart Hoboken at 2:51 p.m., make all stops to River Edge, then express to Hillsdale, with following stops at Pearl River, Nanuet, and Spring Valley only.
  • An additional Port Jervis Line train will depart Hoboken at 2:43 p.m., stop at Secaucus, express to Suffern and make all stops to Port Jervis.

To accommodate early getaway service, the following trains will not operate on November 28:

 

  • Pascack Valley Line train 1633, the 5:55 p.m. departure from Hoboken.
  • Port Jervis Line train 59, the 6:08 p.m. departure from Hoboken.

Extra bus service to New Jersey malls

Starting Friday, NJ TRANSIT will begin offering additional bus service to major New Jersey shopping destinations to accommodate extended store hours and busy shopping times throughout the day. Throughout the holiday shopping season, extra trips or expanded service will be offered on 22 bus routes serving 16 malls and shopping centers throughout the state, including Bridgewater Commons, Cherry Hill Mall, Elizabeth Center at 13A (IKEA), Garden State Plaza, Hamilton Mall, IKEA Paramus, Jersey Gardens, Livingston Mall, Mill Creek Mall, Moorestown Mall, Newport Centre Mall, The Mall at Short Hills, Shore Mall, Willowbrook Mall, Wayne Towne Center Mall and West Belt Mall.

On weekends, kids ride free on NJT

For the Thanksgiving holiday, NJ TRANSIT�s Family Super Saver Fare, which allows up to two children 11 and younger to travel free with each fare-paying adult, will be in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 26 until 6 a.m. Monday, December 1.
