NJ TRANSIT Advances Plans For Modern Bus Facility To Accommodate New Electric Buses

July 24, 2024

NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT is moving ahead with the design phase of the new Union City Bus Garage and Terminal in Union City following approval from NJ TRANSIT’s Board of Directors. The modern state-of-the-art bus facility will support a fleet of electric buses for storage and charging, a service facility for bus cleaning, maintenance and inspection as well as a passenger terminal facility.

“NJ TRANSIT’s commitment to sustainability is an organizational priority,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a model for cost-effective, sustainable bus operations across New Jersey and represents another important step in advancing our Zero Emission Bus Program.”

NJ TRANSIT has entered into a design contract with HDR Inc. of Newark for the design, engineering, and construction assistance services in the amount not to exceed $2,629,942.93, plus five percent for contingencies, subject to the availability of funds. This phase of the project is expected to provide a 10% conceptual design and at least three alternatives, and an initially preferred alternative.

NJ TRANSIT recently demolished the former garage building between Bergenline Ave / New York Ave and 27th Street /29th Street with plans to transform the area with a new 100,000 square-foot facility. The new garage will accommodate a fleet of 40 sixty foot-long articulated battery electric buses or 60 forty foot-long battery electric buses.  The design is intended to be standardizable and cost effective so that similar facilities can be easily replicated across the state.

The total cost of the project is $92,325,000.00 and construction is expected to be completed in late 2030.

NJ TRANSIT’s Electric Bus Program Continues To Advance:

Ealrier this month, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced that it has awarded a $99.5 million grant to NJ TRANSIT to modernize the 31-year-old Meadowlands Bus Garage in Secaucus to accommodate electric buses. Highlights of that project include installing charging equipment and constructing shelter and maintenance facilities. Phase one of the Meadowlands Garage construction will provide charging equipment for 67 buses but will install the infrastructure to expand the site to accommodate 130 buses in later phases.

NJ TRANSIT also continues to operate a fleet of eight battery electric buses in the Camden region.
