CAPACITY RELIEF HIGHLIGHTS NJ TRANSIT BUS SCHEDULE CHANGES

Most New Schedules Begin September 1

NEWARK, NJ, August 29, 2001 -- NJ TRANSIT will revise its bus schedules on Saturday, September 1 (except in Warren County) to reflect changing travel patterns as well as customers' requests and suggestions.

A frequent customer request has been for additional seats and trips to relieve overcrowding. In response, NJ TRANSIT is adding trips to several bus routes while adjusting service on others to meet employer schedules.

"These changes reflect a promise we made in our FY 2002 operating budget," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Jeffrey A. Warsh. "Thanks to Acting Governor Donald DiFrancesco, $13 million dollars has been allotted to address overcrowding issues on our system. These schedule enhancements to our bus service are the first fruits of our effort to provide more seats for customers."

Customers should pick up new timetables at major terminals and on their buses. In addition, customers should check the holiday box on their timetables for specific information about service on Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving and the Friday after Thanksgiving. Sunday schedules will be operated on Veterans’ Day -- Sunday, November 11. Schedules for the Christmas holiday season will be announced at a later date.

Atlantic and Cape May counties

Service on the No. 316 Philadelphia-Wildwood-Cape May Express will end for the season after Labor Day, Monday, September 3.
On the No. 502 Atlantic City-Hamilton Mall-Atlantic/Cape Community College route, the 8:20 a.m. trip from Atlantic City will operate via the Social Security Administration Office in Egg Harbor Township, while the 9:01 a.m. trip from Shore Mall will depart 13 minutes later and will no longer stop at the Social Security Administration B

NEWARK, NJ, August 29, 2000 -- On Monday, September 3 -- Labor Day -- NJ TRANSIT trains will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Most NJ TRANSIT buses will also operate on a Sunday schedule. However, some routes in north Jersey will follow Saturday schedules. Bus passengers should check their timetables for exact information on Labor Day service.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will follow a weekend schedule on Labor Day.

The Newark City Subway will not operate on Labor Day weekend as construction continues to connect the Belleville/Bloomfield extension to the current City Subway system. Substitute bus service will be provided. Customers should use schedules in new timetables dated August 27. On Saturday, September 1 and Monday, September 3, customers should follow the Saturday bus substitution schedule. On Sunday, September 2, the Sunday bus substitution schedule will be operated. Regular Newark City Subway operations will resume on Tuesday, September 4.

NJ TRANSIT will operate early getaway trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast and Raritan Valley lines on Friday, August 31.

Northeast Corridor
- Train 8855, an early getaway train, will depart Newark Penn Station at 3:39 p.m., operate express to Rahway, then makes all stops to Trenton, arriving there at 4:55 p.m.
North Jersey Coast Line
- Train 8301, an early getaway train, will depart Newark Penn Station at 3:49 p.m., operate express to Woodbridge, then make all stops to Bay Head, arriving there at 5:44 p.m. Passengers willuilding. In addition, trips that operate when school is in session will resume.
- On the No. 505 Atlantic City-Margate-Longport route, the 7:56 a.m. departure from Atlantic and South Carolina Avenues in Atlantic City will be extended to Venice Park to relieve overcrowding. This trip will depart Venice Park at 7:38 a.m.
- On the No. 553 Upper Deerfield-Atlantic City route, four trips will be adjusted to operate via 32^nd Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Route 40 in Mays Landing to serve the Superior Court and Conectiv buildings.
- Minor changes will occur on the No. 313/315 Philadelphia-Wildwood-Cape May and No. 319 New York-Atlantic City-Cape May routes. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.
Bergen County
- One additional trip will be added during the afternoon peak period on the No. 155 Bogota-Ridgefield Park-New York route.
- Additional trips from New York will be added on the No. 158 Fort Lee-Edgewater-New York route between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. weekdays.
- On the No. 165 Westwood-New York route, two additional peak period express trips will operate via the Garden State Parkway and Forest Avenue -- one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
- Several changes will occur on the No. 166 Dumont-Tenafly-New York route:
- Two mid-afternoon Turnpike Express trips from New York to Bergenfield will be added.
- Five I-95 express trips will be added: one during morning peak, two during afternoon peak, and two evening trips at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
- Four additional Turnpike Express trips will be added during the morning peak period.
- On the No. 168 not need to change trains at Long Branch.
Raritan Valley Line
- Train 5425, the 1:06 p.m. departure from Newark Penn Station, will be extended to High Bridge and make all stops.
- Train 8529, an early getaway train, will depart Newark Penn Station at 3:32 p.m. and make all stops to Raritan, arriving there at 4:29 p.m.
- Train 5711, the 6:23 p.m. departure from Newark Penn Station, will be combined with train 5903, which leaves Newark at 6:29 p.m. The combined train makes all stops to High Bridge.
The statewide transit agency's bus and rail Weekend Family Super Saver Fare, which allows two children 11 and under to travel free with each fare-paying adult, will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday, August 31 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 4. Senior citizen and round-trip excursion tickets will be valid without restriction throughout the period.

Schedule Changes on Tuesday, September 4

Train service will change on the North Jersey Coast Line and the Gladstone Branch the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, September 4.

Gladstone Branch
- Schedules on several midday trains will change to reflect the conclusion of summer track maintenance. Customers should check new Morris & Essex Line timetables for details.
North Jersey Coast Line
- All Summer Shore Service trains will be discontinued. (Note: The last day for the Pony Express is Sunday, September 2. Pony Express service will not operate on Labor Day, September 3.)
- Hourly weekend service will operate between Paramus-New York route, three additional Turnpike Express trips -- two in morning peak and one in afternoon peak -- will be added and timetables will be revised.
- Minor changes will occur on the No. 160 Elmwood Park-New York, No. 163 Ridgewood-New York, No. 164 Midland Park-New York, No. 167 Harrington Park-New York, No. 181 Hoboken-New York, No. 182 Hackensack-New York, No. 188 River Road-New York, No. 321 Vince Lombardi Park/Ride-New York and 712 Hackensack-Willowbrook Mall routes. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.
Camden County
- On the No. 405 Philadelphia-Merchantville-Cherry Hill Mall route, weekday trips between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. will be rerouted to serve the Camden Housing Authority offices on Memorial Avenue and Admiral Wilson Boulevard.
- Weekend service on the No. 409 Trenton-Willingboro-Philadelphia, No. 413 Philadelphia-Mount Holly-Burlington and No. 419 Burlington-Philadelphia will be restructured. The Nos. 409 and 419 buses will no longer operate between Burlington City and Burlington Center mall via Route 541 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Instead, the No. 413 bus will be extended from Burlington Center Mall to Burlington City via Route 541 and run every hour, instead of every 90 minutes as it currently does.
- Minor changes will occur on the No. 403 Turnersville-Lindenwold-Philadelphia, No. 452 Camden-Aquarium-Pennsauken and No. 459 Echelon Mall-Avandale routes. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.
Essex County
- On the No. 1 Newark route, two early morning weekday trips will be added to alleviate overcrowding.
- The No. 11 Newark-Willowbrook Mall route will have Long Branch and New York, while diesel shuttle service between Bay Head and Long Branch will operate every 1-3 hours on weekends.
- Customers should check revised timetables, issued September 4, for more details.

On the No. 73 Newark-Orange-Livingston route, additional trips will be added weekday evenings and Saturdays to relieve overcrowding.
Additional weekday and Sunday trips will be added on the No. 94 Stuyvesant Avenue Crosstown route to relieve overcrowding.
Minor changes will occur on the No. 25 Springfield Avenue, No. 27 Mount Prospect, No. 28 Newark-Montclair State, No. 34 Market Street, No. 37 Lyons Avenue, No. 41 Park Avenue, No. 62 Newark-Woodbridge-Perth Amboy and No. 96 Eighteenth Street Crosstown routes. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.

Hudson County

The No. 85 Hoboken-Harmon Meadow-Mill Creek route will now stop at the Mill Creek Mall entrance at the requests of mall customers and management.
An additional weekday trip will depart New York at 10:15 a.m. on the No. 111 Jersey Gardens-New York route. This trip will operate through Union City to accommodate city residents who work at Jersey Gardens Mall and the IKEA shopping center.
Minor changes will occur on the No. 80 Newark Avenue, No. 87 King, No. 126 Hoboken-New York and No. 128 Boulevard East-New York routes. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.

Mercer County

Minor changes will occur on the No. 606 Princeton-Mercerville and No. 609 Ewing-Quakerbridge Mall-Mercer County College routes. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.

Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties

Additional trips will be added on several lines to relieve overcrowding:
- One additional morning peak period trip to Weehawken and two additional afternoon peak period trips to Lakewood will be added on the No. 64 Lakewood-Jersey City-Weehawken route. In addition, a morning peak period trip will be extended to originate in Freehold rather than Old Bridge.
- One additional morning peak period trip to Weehawken and one additional afternoon peak trip to East Brunswick will be added to the No. 68 East Brunswick-Jersey City-Weehawken route.
- One additional morning peak period trip to New York will be added on the No. 131 Sayreville-New York route.
- An additional mid-afternoon trip will be added on the No. 137 Toms River-New York route on weekdays. This trip will depart the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 3 p.m. There will also be added Friday afternoon service from New York as well as a 9 a.m. trip from Toms River to New York on Mondays and Wednesdays.
- One additional afternoon peak period trip will be added to the No. 138 East Brunswick-New York route. This trip will operate to Ferry Road in Old Bridge.
- Two additional morning peak period trips and two additional afternoon peak period trips will be added on the No. 139 Lakewood-New York route. An additional late evening trip from New York will also be added to this route.
Several routes that operate in Monmouth County will be renumbered:
- The M20 Asbury Park-Point Pleasant Beach route will become the No. 830 Asbury Park-Point Pleasant Beach route. In addition, four trips — two in the morning and the two in the afternoon — will be extended to northern Asbury Park and will terminate at the intersection of Deal Lake Drive and Kingsley Avenue.
- The M21 Red Bank-Long Branch route will become the No. 831 Red Bank-Long Branch route.
- The M22 Red Bank-Malls-Asbury Park route will become the No. 832 Red Bank-Malls-Asbury Park route.
- The M23 Red Bank-Freehold route will become the No. 833 Red Bank-Freehold route.
- The M24 Red Bank-Highlands route will become the No. 834 Red Bank-Highlands route.
- The M25 Red Bank-Sea Bright route will become the No. 835 Red Bank-Sea Bright route.
- The M26 Asbury Park-Freehold route will become the No. 836 Asbury Park-Freehold route. In addition, certain trips will no longer operate along Route 66 and Centra State Medical Center.
- The M27 Long Branch-Asbury Park-Seaview Square Mall route will become the No. 837 Long Branch-Asbury Park-Seaview Square Mall route.
Three additional trips will added on the No. 813 Perth Amboy-Middlesex County College route to accommodate increased service requests by employees at Federal Express’ Raritan Center location. These trips will operate express via Route 440 and will bypass Metuchen. A late evening trip — departing Middlesex County College at 10 p.m. — will be extended to serve Federal Express’ Raritan Center location. Customers should check their timetables for details.
Minor changes will occur on the No. 814 North Brunswick-New Brunswick-Middlesex County College route. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.

Passaic County

On the No. 192 Clifton-New York route, one additional Clifton express and one additional local trip from New York will be added on weekday evenings. Also, early express trips to Clifton-Allwood that operate during the summer will be discontinued. Finally, the 5:10 p.m. local trip from New York will depart five minutes earlier.
The No. 193 Pompton Lakes-Packanack Lake-Willowbrook-New York route will no longer operate along Lake Drive East and the east side of Packanack Lake because of bridge weight restrictions on Osborne Terrace. Also, additional trips that operate only during the summer will end.
Minor changes will occur on the No. 72 Paterson-Newark, No. 74 Main-Passaic, No. 190 Paterson-New York, No. 195 Willowbrook-Cedar Grove-New York, No. 197 Warwick-New York, No. 704 Paterson-Willowbrook Mall, No. 705 Passaic Willowbrook Mall and 712 Hackensack-Willowbrook Mall routes. Customers should check their timetables for exact information.

Union County

The No. 112 Clark-New York route will no longer operate on North Avenue between Newark and Madison Avenues in Elizabeth. The route will instead operate along Newark, Fairmount and Madison Avenues because NJ TRANSIT’s new cruiser buses do not meet height restrictions for the North Avenue Bridge. In addition, there will be minor schedule adjustments. Customers should check their timetables for details.
There will be minor changes to the morning express schedule of the No. 113 Dunellen-New York route.
On the No. 114 Bridgewater-New York route, two additional trips will be added from New York to Springfield on Sundays to alleviate overcrowding.

Warren County

On the No. 890 South Main Street and No. 891 Heckman routes, buses will be extended to serve the Pohatcong Plaza Shopping Center on weekdays and Saturdays. On weekdays, adjustments will also be made on trips operating to Phillipsburg High School. These changes take effect September 10. Customers should check new timetables for further details.
