NEWARK, NJ ¿ NJ TRANSIT will operate modified service on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line this afternoon following an Amtrak power outage that disrupted rail service from Washington, D.C. to New York.

MidTOWN DIRECT service will continue to operate to and from Hoboken for the remainder of the day. Regular service on all lines will resume tomorrow, May 26, 2006.

From 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line service will operate as follows:

Northeast Corridor

 

  • Three trains per hour will operate express to Metropark and then make all local stops to Trenton.
  • One all-stop local train will operate per hour.
  • All trains will stop at Secaucus and Newark Penn Station.

North Jersey Coast Line

 

  • One train per hour will operate express to Woodbridge, making all local stops thereafter.
  • One all-stop local train will operate per hour, making all local stops beginning with Newark Liberty International Airport Station, stopping at North Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Linden and Rahway.
  • All trains will stop at Secaucus and Newark Penn Station.
  • Trains 2307, 2309 and 2313 from Hoboken to Bay Head will operate normally.

Normal service on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line will resume at 8 p.m. tonight.

Hoboken Division

With MidTOWN DIRECT trains operating to and from Hoboken Terminal, NJ TRANSIT will reduce some redundant service on the Morris & Essex and Montclair-Boonton lines. For example, MidTOWN DIRECT 6200-series trains that normally operate from New York will replace some 200-series trains, and MidTOWN DIRECT 6300-series trains will replace some 300-series trains. All MidTOWN DIRECT trains will depart Hoboken on their scheduled New York departure times.

Cross-honoring of NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes will remain in effect through this evening with NJ TRANSIT bus, private bus companies and PATH.

To further assist customers, additional NJ TRANSIT staff will be on hand at major terminals and stations to answer questions and direct customers.

Shortly after 8 a.m., Amtrak lost overhead power on the Northeast Corridor between Washington and New York. NJ TRANSIT immediately put its emergency plan in place sending NJ TRANSIT Police and Emergency Response Team members to trains and stations to assist customers.

A total of 24 NJ TRANSIT trains were stranded by today¿s outage. Of those, nine were stopped at stations and 15 trains came to a stop between stations. As of 2 p.m., 41 NJ TRANSIT trains had been cancelled and 32 MidTOWN DIRECT trains were routed to or from Hoboken Terminal instead of New York.

Approximately 70,000 customers travel aboard NJ TRANSIT trains to New York Penn Station on a typical weekday.
