Two-Wheeled Adventures Welcomed
It’s a great time to take a bike ride and enjoy New Jersey. Consider our Bike Aboard Program if you’re planning such a trip.
On Rail
Throughout our rail system, stations are accessible to all bicycles. On weekends, there are designated bike-friendly trains provided.
Collapsible bikes are always permitted on all trains. Standard-frame bicycles are available on many, but not all trains, particularly rush hours trains where ridership is heaviest. Bike-friendly trains are easily identified on our rail timetables; look for the bike icons next to the designated trains.
Your bike should be secured in designated areas on our trains.
Bicycles are permitted on all weekday trains on all lines from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Bicycles are always permitted on Atlantic City Line trains. Trains can accommodate up to two bicycles on each single-level rail car and up to eight bicycles on each multilevel rail car, subject to crowding or the accessibility needs of other customers.
Bicycles are not permitted on inbound trains with a final destination of Hoboken, Newark, or New York during peak morning and afternoon travel periods, between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., and outbound trains that originate in Hoboken, Newark, or New York between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. This restriction also includes any station stop in between.
At some stations, bike racks and bike lockers are available for use.
On weekends, bicycles are permitted on all Raritan Valley, Gladstone Branch, Montclair-Boonton, Main, Bergen County, Pascack Valley, Port Jervis, and Atlantic City Line trains. These trains are listed with a bicycle symbol in public timetables. Bicycles also are permitted on all Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, and Morristown Line trains except for trains arriving at Penn Station New York between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., and trains originating from Penn Station New York between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Bus and Light Rail
Bike racks are available on many of our buses.
Most NJ TRANSIT buses also offer bike access if they are equipped with bike racks or an under-floor luggage compartment on a first-come, first-served basis. Child-carrier seats, tandem bicycles, and bicycle locks are not permitted on bus bicycle racks.
River LINE riders can hang their bikes from bike racks.
For light rail riders, bicycles are always permitted on River LINE trains. Bicycles are also permitted on Newark Light Rail and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail trains during weekday off-peak hours, and all day on Saturdays, Sundays, and New Jersey holidays. Please remain with your bike in the low-floor vestibule of the vehicle and hold or secure it while traveling. Bicycle hanging racks are available in River LINE vehicles. Please do not leave your bicycle unaccompanied, blocking aisles, or placed on empty seats.
Know Before You Ride
- Walk with your bicycle on platforms and in station buildings. For safety reasons, please do not bring bicycles on escalators. Use an elevator instead if one is available.
- Allow other customers to exit and enter a train before boarding or detraining with a bicycle.
- Customers must be able to lift their bicycles up and down stairs while boarding and detraining rail cars.
- Secure your bicycle with tie-downs in the accessible area of commuter rail cars. Customers may hold and steady a bicycle that is not secured by tie-downs in these designated areas.
- If space is not available, customers with bicycles must wait for the next available train; Senior citizens and persons with disabilities have priority to the accessible area.
- Please remain with your bicycle and follow all directions from train crew members to ensure your safety and the safety of your fellow customers.
E-Scooters And E-Bikes
Please note that scooters and bikes with motors are not permitted on any trains, buses or light rail vehicles, or at NJ TRANSIT stations and outlying property. Customers are not permitted to ride, charge, store or transport these devices anywhere on NJ TRANSIT's system.
NJ TRANSIT’s Bike Aboard program does not require preregistration or permits, and there is no additional charge to bring bicycles aboard our trains. Groups may be accommodated with advance reservations on some trains by calling our Group Sales Division at 973-491-7220.
