Ticket Vending Machine Project Crosses Finish Line

NJ TRANSIT recently completed another systemwide fare modernization project with the installation of 558 new ticket vending machines (TVMs) on our bus, rail and light rail systems, taking your travel experience to another level. The new machines provide you with faster transaction times, contactless payment options and much more.

“These new customer-friendly TVMs represent just one aspect of a complete modernization of NJ TRANSIT’s entire fare collection system, including new handheld mobile devices for train crews, new onboard bus validators, and many new mobile ticketing options,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “All of these methods include contactless fare payment options, which have proven especially welcome and popular with customers returning to our system as we emerge from the pandemic.”

You can purchase tickets and passes from the new TVMs using contactless cards and mobile wallet applications, and no longer need to insert your debit/credit card into the machine. Improved functionality includes faster printers and new display screens that provide important travel information and service advisories. An overhead display also provides rail customers with train arrival and departure information at their station as well as special promotions.

Finally, the new TVMs are easier to use for customers with disabilities thanks to audible and visual instructions, as well as a height adjustment to make it easier for customers with mobility challenges to access the machines.

Don’t forget your mobile device may be your best option for doing business with the NJ TRANSIT mobile app, which, among other things, includes the ability to purchase and display tickets and passes, get real-time bus and rail service information, get push notifications about service issues and determine seating availability on your approaching train or bus. An Access Link mobile app is also available for paratransit customers with similar features.

The new TVMs are just one phase of our larger fare modernization program, which also includes the ongoing rollout of new onboard ticket validators on buses, handheld validators for train crews and a future NJ TRANSIT fare card, providing additional payment methods for customers to utilize.
