Newark Penn Station – Reimagining an Icon

Newark Penn Station (NPS) is undergoing an amazing transformation! Designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, NPS was built in 1935 by the Pennsylvania Railroad and is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The station is served by NJ TRANSIT trains, buses and Newark Light Rail, Amtrak and PATH trains, and Greyhound and Coach USA buses.

The State of New Jersey is now making a five-year, $190 million investment in the station, which is the centerpiece of the region’s transportation network and an economic engine for the City of Newark. To serve you better, NJ TRANSIT is renovating, improving and restoring NPS with a combination of short- and long-term enhancements focused on improving the customer’s travel experience.

Near-term projects include interior and exterior cleaning of the building walls, restoration of the original Pennsylvania Railroad benches, brighter lighting and fresh paint throughout the station, historic tile restoration in the stairwells, updated bathroom facilities, and new air curtains to help separate indoor and outdoor temperatures at the station entrances. Also, look for new and improved directional and way-finding signage to help you navigate your way through the station.

Short-term projects include improved lighting at the pedestrian walkways on Market Street and Edison Place, upgraded overhead signage on the platforms, improved drainage and paving at the station’s bus lanes, improved HVAC and air handling capabilities, two additional elevators available for customers to access the platforms, new platform doors and historic art installations.

Longer-term works includes:

  • restoration of the grand waiting room
  • enhanced pedestrian access and landscaping
  • re-envisioned entranceways
  • a new public address system and customer information displays
  • renewed escalators and expanded elevators
  • new dining and shopping experiences

If you happen to be passing through the station while work is underway, please pardon our appearance and avoid active construction zones.
