Help Us Develop a Sustainability Plan

Long-Term Vision to Create Clean Energy Future

NJ TRANSIT is in the process of producing its first-ever Sustainability Plan and we’re seeking your feedback to assist us in the development of the plan. Through a series of webinars and surveys, NJ TRANSIT will incorporate your input to help shape the future of sustainability at the agency.

The current survey, which is available through April 27, 2022, asks participants about the relative importance of greenhouse gas emissions, clean vehicle technology and other sustainability issues.

“Commitment to sustainability is one of the most important commitment’s NJ TRANSIT has made as we strive for a clean energy future,” said New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti. “We’re on track to fully transition to a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040, aligning with Governor Murphy’s Energy Master Plan and ensuring NJ TRANSIT will be a leader in sustainability.”

“Thanks to the comprehensive roadmap established through NJT2030, NJ TRANSIT is working harder than ever to promote a more sustainable future for our planet,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “NJ TRANSIT’s first-of-its-kind Sustainability Plan will build on efforts already underway in a cleaner rail and bus fleet, expanding and optimizing solar energy assets, implementing energy efficiency and conservation measures – in short, furthering our goal to be one of the most socially responsible, environmentally-friendly transit agencies in the world.”

Highlighted in the “NJT2030: A 10-Year Strategic Plan,” the development and implementation of the Sustainability Plan are the next steps in advancing NJ TRANSIT’s commitment to sustainability. It will enable the agency to create a vision for a more sustainable future for the planet, the communities it serves, and for the NJ TRANSIT organization. Sustainability themes like water and energy consumption, equitable transportation, clean vehicle technology, resiliency, and customer experience are among the themes that will be explored in the plan.

The first step in creating the Sustainability Plan is identifying what matters most to NJ TRANSIT’s stakeholders, helping to prioritize the factors that will advance the agency’s role in sustainability. NJ TRANSIT is reaching out to its customers, employees, the general public, environmental advocates, and community leaders to develop the framework for the plan. NJ TRANSIT will keep the public informed of the progress it makes as the plan moves forward.

While the Sustainability Plan is being developed, NJ TRANSIT is advancing several clean-energy projects, including an electric bus pilot program in Camden. On March 22, 2022, NJ TRANSIT unveiled new charging infrastructure at Newton Avenue Garage in Camden (pictured below) that will support eight electric buses on Camden-area bus routes beginning later this year. Meanwhile, the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors recently authorized plans for a similar pilot project at Hilton Garage in Maplewood, as well as a systemwide survey and condition assessment for all 16 of NJ TRANSIT’s bus garages to identify the structural, power & utility, information technology, and other physical upgrades needed to support zero-emissions buses.
