Departments
- Agency Safety Management
Agency Safety Management is dedicated to advancing transit safety through the implementation of Safety Management Systems (SMS) methodologies and principles. This department strives to achieve its mission by developing effective policies within the transit industry, prioritizing, and managing safety risks, and establishing a Safety Promotion Program tailored to specific needs.
- Capital Delivery
Capital Delivery at NJ TRANSIT oversees the development and execution of major infrastructure projects, designed to meet the needs of our customers and community. The department manages NJ TRANSIT’s Capital Plan, which outlines essential projects, budget considerations, and an ambitious schedule aimed at enhancing the speed, reliability, safety, reach, and quality of NJ TRANSIT services. Currently, over 200 projects are either in the design phase or under construction, making NJ TRANSIT’s capital program one of the largest in the nation according to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
- Communications & Customer Experience
The Communications & Customer Experience Department at NJ TRANSIT has the twin objectives of providing relevant information to multiple external & internal audiences in a timely and usable manner, as well as growing ridership and revenue through creative marketing and innovative promotional partnerships. It is the department’s goal to see that the company is represented in the most favorable light to the varied constituencies it serves.
- Compliance & Ethics
The Compliance & Ethics department reviews current and tracking changes in federal and state laws, regulations, and rules impacting NJ TRANSIT to provide guidance to business and operating units. The department is also responsible for ensuring NJ TRANSIT is accountable for the expenditure, reporting and monitoring of federal and state funds. Staff provides advice to NJ TRANSIT employees on ethics matters, including but not limited to conflicts of interest, attendance at events, and outside employment and activities, and conducts Whistleblower investigations.
- Finance
The Finance department manages financial resources and protects NJ TRANSIT’s assets through the development of a corporate-wide financial strategy. Finance handles a variety of functions aimed at ensuring financial stability, supporting strategic decisions, efficiency, and compliance.
- General Counsel
The NJ TRANSIT Office of The General Counsel includes attorneys who are legal experts in various areas of the Law such as contracts, procurement, real estate, labor, employment & personnel, and general corporate law practice. The Office of The General Counsel partners with all NJ TRANSIT departments to ensure that NJ TRANSIT is legally protected in all its operations while supporting the company’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and affordable public transportation.
- Government and Community Relations
The Government and Community Relations (GCR) department serves as NJ TRANSIT’s primary point of contact for elected and appointed officials in 565 municipalities and 21 counties, 120 state legislators, and numerous community, advocacy, and business organizations throughout the State. The department conducts community outreach and obtains support for NJ TRANSIT projects, addresses community concerns related to our facilities or service, administers the effective functioning of the North and South Jersey Transit Advisory Committees, monitors state legislative and regulatory proposals, and takes action to protect the interests of the agency.
- Human Resources
Human Resources oversees the full employee lifecycle at NJ TRANSIT, including recruitment, onboarding, training, development, and offboarding. Human Resources helps to ensure the organization's success and long-term sustainability by attracting, retaining, and developing talented employees.
- Information Technology
The Information Technology department at NJ TRANSIT delivers technology-driven solutions to support the organization's mission and objectives. It is responsible for implementing and maintaining systems that enhance the efficiency of NJ TRANSIT's transportation-related activities. Career opportunities within NJ TRANSIT's Information Technology department span across Transportation, Infrastructure, and Enterprise IT disciplines.
- Organizational Services
Organizational Services manages and provides maintenance to the mailrooms and cafeterias at NJ TRANSIT Corporate Headquarters in Newark, NJ and General Office Building in Maplewood, NJ. Organizational Services also manages the Non-Revenue Fleet consisting of 929 vehicles that support Administration, Police, Bus, and Rail Operations.
- Procurement & Logistics
Procurement & Logistics moves NJ TRANSIT’s mission forward by cultivating an inclusive best-in-class organization of responsible stewards that employ strategic, efficient, and transparent processes to fairly source and manage goods, equipment, and services.
- Rail Management
Rail Operations is at the helm of NJ TRANSIT's twelve rail lines, ensuring smooth and efficient daily management and maintenance. This dedicated team tackles public-facing challenges, designs and upkeeps railways and equipment, negotiates labor agreements, and leads a skilled workforce of 4,000, including Locomotive Engineers and Conductors.
- Surface Transit Management
NJ TRANSIT’s Surface Transit division encompasses all aspects of Bus, Light Rail, Access Link paratransit, and Private Carrier Affairs for the nation’s third largest transit agency, providing service delivery for over 500,000 daily trips on more than 2,400 revenue vehicles. There are a variety of career opportunities within Surface Transit on the operations, maintenance, and support teams. Areas of responsibility include management, service planning, transportation, vehicle maintenance, operational and technical training, labor relations, facilities and infrastructure support, and budget control, as well as various front-line and field positions.
