Fare Holiday FAQ

In case you have questions about the NJ TRANSIT Fare Holiday between August 26th and September 2nd, here is some helpful information:

How does the fare holiday work?

Between Monday, August 26th and September 2nd, 2024, customers may simply board any NJ TRANSIT train, bus, or light rail vehicle to travel to their destination. Access Link customers must continue to reserve rides via their reservation system. Customers will not be required to display or scan a ticket during the fare holiday, but tickets will be required again for all travel beginning Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024.

Which services are included in the fare holiday?

All NJ TRANSIT bus routes, trains, light rail and Access Link are all part of the fare holiday, including Metro-North trains operated by NJ TRANSIT. This includes NJ TRANSIT bus routes contracted out to private carriers. The fare holiday does not apply to privately-operated buses that accept NJ TRANSIT tickets, such as Broadway Bus. For a full list of bus routes covered by the fare holiday, please visit: https://www.njtransit.com/bus-to and look under "Download PDF Schedules".

PATH and PATCO trains are not part of the fare holiday.

The AirTrain at Newark Liberty International Airport is also not covered by the Fare Holiday, and customers must purchase the appropriate tickets to pass through the fare gates at Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station for travel to/from airport terminals on the AirTrain.

Customers may purchase tickets for the Air Train at ticket vending machines at the rail station or inside airport terminals, at any NJ TRANSIT ticket office, or by tapping their contactless credit card to pay at the faregate.

Customers who typically purchase joint tickets with 3rd parties, such as SEPTA or Ferry services, will still be responsible for purchase the non-NJ TRANSIT portion of the fare.

Customers looking to travel on SEPTA from Trenton Transit Center must purchase a SEPTA ticket for travel at a NJ TRANSIT ticket vending machine or ticket office.

Do I still need to pay for parking at NJ TRANSIT facilities?

Yes - Parking fees remain in effect during the fare holiday at all locations.

Do I still need to get a ticket during the fare holiday?

No, customers are not required to have a ticket to travel on services operated by NJ TRANSIT during the fare holiday. Tickets will be required again for all travel beginning Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024

Do Light Rail customers still have to validate a ticket for travel on the River LINE, HBLR or Newark Light Rail?

No, customers traveling on light rail systems do not need to purchase or validate a ticket for travel.

Does this affect the Access Link RIDERS’ CHOICE program?

Vouchers for travel via 3rd parties participating in the Access Link RIDERS’ CHOICE program will continue to be required for travel using those providers.

Will this fare holiday impact current pass holders?

To compensate our loyal monthly pass customers, September monthly pass purchases will be discounted 25%, which will be automatically reflected in the purchase price in the NJ TRANSIT mobile app, Ticket Vending Machines & Ticket Windows, beginning at 5pm on Monday, 8/19.

Customers should weigh their travel needs before deciding to purchase weekly passes or 10-trip tickets for either the week of 8/24-8/30 or 8/31-9/6.

What if I already received my September monthly pass through my employer-benefits provider?

NJ TRANSIT will process credits to your employer benefit account for future purchases.
