NJ TRANSIT SET TO BEGIN PUBLIC HEARINGS ON FARE AND SERVICE PROPOSAL

Public comment encouraged at locations across the system

March 23, 2010
NJT-10-022

NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT will hold the first of 12 scheduled public hearings and information sessions beginning Thursday, March 25, to allow the public the opportunity to learn more about the proposed fare increases and service changes and offer comments before the plan is considered by the Board of Directors on April 14.

To ensure an inclusive public comment process, NJ TRANSIT has scheduled eight public hearings and four information sessions at locations across the state and in New York from March 25 through March 27.  The hearings and information sessions will be held in the evenings and on Saturday to encourage participation.

Members of the public also may submit comments online at www.njtransit.com/budget, where details of the proposed fare increases and service changes are available.  The online public comment period has been extended until 5 p.m., Monday, March 29.

To date, NJ TRANSIT has received about 2,500 comments via the online comment form.

About Public Hearings & Information Sessions

By statute, public hearings must take place on weekdays, in the evening, and within the State of New Jersey.  NJ TRANSIT is supplementing its slate of public hearings with four information sessions—one in Manhattan and three on a Saturday.  As a practical matter, there will be no difference in the way public hearings and information sessions are conducted.  Public comments will be accepted at both and will carry the same weight.
