NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT will offer “early getaway” rail and bus service on Friday, July 1, for the benefit of customers leaving work early for the Independence Day holiday weekend.

 

On Friday, July 1, extra outbound trains will operate on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex, Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines starting at approximately 1 p.m.  Extra buses will operate from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on more than two dozen bus routes starting around noon.  Visit njtransit.com for details.

NEWARK, NJ — With tens of thousands of spectators expected to gather along the New Jersey Waterfront to view the annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display over the Hudson River, NJ TRANSIT is offering travel tips to customers planning to attend the big show.

 

Fourth of July Fireworks Service Overview

 

New Jersey’s Hudson River Waterfront is accessible by NJ TRANSIT rail, bus and light rail service to Hoboken Terminal.  NJ TRANSIT operates six rail lines and five bus routes with direct service to Hoboken, as well as the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.On Independence Day, Monday, July 4, trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all lines.  Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend schedule.  Newark Light Rail will operate on a Saturday schedule.  River Line will operate on a Sunday schedule.  Bus schedules vary by route—customers are advised to check their timetables or visit njtransit.com for schedule information.

 

Summer Savings

 

With the summer season in full swing, the holiday weekend is a great time for customersstyle="mso-spacerun: yes;">  Please note that the five bus routes and other routes that serve the Hudson River Waterfront may experience delays and detours on July 4 as a result of traffic congestion. 

 

Rail Service

 

On July 4, the following rail lines will provide direct service to Hoboken:

  • Main Line
  • Bergen County Line
  • Pascack Valley Line
  •  

     

    • Beach Packages:  Save up to $6.50 on admission to one of five beaches— Long Branch, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach and Belmar—by purchasing round-trip train fare and a beach pass for one price at NJ TRANSIT ticket vending machines (choose “Special Promotions” and select “Beach Package”) or at ticket windows.  Customers can purchase the package for $31.50 from New York Penn Station or any station on the Main, Bergen County or Pascack Valley lines (except from Metro-North stations), and for $23.50 from Hoboken Terminal or Newark Penn Station. 
       
      • Shorelink Shuttle to the Beach:  Starting tomorrow, Monmouth County will offer shuttle service fromstyle="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Port Jervis Line
      • Morris & Essex Lines
      • Montclair Line (from Bay Street Station and points east only)

       

      On the Morris & Essex Lines, NJ TRANSIT will supplement existing weekend service with eight additional trains to and from Hoboken Terminal, including four trips between Dover and Hoboken, three trips between Summit and Hoboken, and an additional trip from Newark Broad Street to Hoboken.  Additional trains to Hoboken before the event will operate between approximately 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.  After the show, extra Morris & Essex trains will depart Hoboken at 10:05 p.m., 10:40 p.m., 11:30 p.m. and 12:25 a.m.

  • Six Flags Great Adventure or Hurricane Harbor:  Save up to $37 by purchasing round-trip bus transportation and park admission together.  NJ TRANSIT provides express bus service to Six Flags from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, Newark Penn Station, Philadelphia Greyhound Terminal and the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden. 
     
  • Monmouth Park:  Board a train anywhere on NJ TRANSIT's rail system and save $6.00 when you travel to Monmouth Park Racetrack. 

     

    On the Port Jervis Line, an additional train will depart Port Jervis at 4:07 p.m., make all stops to Suffern, and then operate express to Secaucus Junction and Hoboken.

    Customers traveling from New York City or stations along the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast or Raritan Valley lines can transfer at the Frank R. Lautenberg Station at Secaucus Junction to reach Hoboken Terminal or take PATH service to Hoboken from stations in New York, Newark, Harrison or Jersey City. 


    Hudson-Bergen Light Rail connects the waterfront communities of Hudson County, including service to Hoboken Terminal and Liberty State Park.  On July 4, light rail service will operate on a regular weekend schedule (trains every 20 minutes).  Light rail tickets can be purchased at Hoboken Terminal or any other light rail station.  Visit njtransit.com for details.

     

    Travel Advice for Customers

     

    To help ensure a safe, enjoyable trip, NJ TRANSIT is offering the following travel tips:

      Simply purchase a round-trip package to Monmouth Park from NJ TRANSIT ticket vending machines (choose “Special Promotions” and select “Monmouth Park”) or at ticket windows, and receive Grandstand Admission and an official track program for $1 plus round-trip train fare.

On weekends, kids ride free on NJT

 

 

  • Plan Ahead.  NJ TRANSIT rail and light rail service will operate on a weekend schedule.  Get your schedule information in advance from njtransit.com.
  • Buy Roundtrip Tickets Before Starting Your Trip.  Remember, you’ll need a ticket to get home.  Please purchase round-trip tickets from ticket vending machines at your boarding station before getting on a Hoboken-bound train.  Ticket lines will be long after the fireworks, and customers will not be allowed to board a train without a ticket.  On light rail, you must activate your ticket by time-stamping it in an orange machine before boarding the train.  
  • Arrive Early.  You’re smart for taking public transportation, but many other people have the same great idea.  Plan to arrive on the Waterfront as early as possible, and consider staying around for a bit>Every weekend, families riding NJ TRANSIT can save with the Family Super Saver Fare, which allows two children 11 and younger to travel free with each fare-paying adult.  For the Independence Day holiday weekend, the program will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday, July 1 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 5.

  • Delays are possible.  Large crowds can sometimes have an impact on train operations.  Be courteous to your fellow riders by standing clear of the doors, moving all the way into the car, and making all seats available.
  • Know the Rules.  Due to crowding conditions, bicycles may not be brought aboard NJ TRANSIT trains on July 4.  As a reminder, smoking is not permitted aboard trains, in stations or on platforms.

 

Important Information for Bus Customers

 

On Monday, July 4, between 4 p.m. and midnight, many streets along the Hudson Waterfront will be subject to closure and traffic congestion due to the Macy’s Fireworks Display over the Hudson River. 

 

  • NJ TRANSIT bus service along the Hudson Waterfront may be subject to detours and delays before, during and after the fireworks.
  • In most cases, buses will be detoured to roadways farther west from the Hudson River.  Bus stops near fireworks viewing areas may be inaccessible.   
  • Customers should allow extra travel time.  

 

Several bus routes may experience service impacts as follows: 

 

  • No. 22 North Bergen-Union City-Hoboken:  Possible service delays expected between Weehawken and Hoboken Terminal, and detour as follows: 
    • From Hoboken Terminal - Northbound:  Buses will operate via Observer Highway, Jackson Avenue, Newark Avenue, Clinton Avenue, and 12th Street to Willow Avenue then via regular route from that location.
    • To Hoboken Terminal - southbound:  Buses leaving the regular route at Willow Avenue and 14th Street will operate via Willow Avenue and Observer Highway to Hoboken Terminal.
  • No. 80 Newark Ave (Exchange Place):  Possible service delays and additional ridership heading to Exchange Place.
  • No. 84/86 Service Nungessers-Newport Mall:  Possible service delays, along the Bergenline Avenue and Park Avenue corridors.
  • No. 85 Mill Creek- Hoboken:  Possible service delays expected between Paterson Plank Road and Observer Highway into Hoboken Terminal.
  • No. 87 King Drive (Hoboken Terminal):  Possible service delays and additional ridership expected between Paterson Plank Road and Observer Highway into the terminal.
  • No. 89 North Bergen-Hoboken:  Possible service delays expected between Weehawken and Hoboken Terminal, and detour as follows:
    • From Hoboken Terminal - Northbound:  Buses will operate via Observer Highway, Jackson Avenue, Newark Avenue, Clinton Avenue, and 12th Street to Willow Avenue then via regular route from that location.
    • To Hoboken Terminal - southbound:  Buses leaving the regular route at Willow Avenue and 14th Street will operate via Willow Avenue and Observer Highway to Hoboken Terminal.
  • No. 126 Hoboken-New York:  Possible service delays expected between NY PABT and Hoboken Terminal, and detour as follows:
    • From Hoboken Terminal - Northbound:  Buses will operate via Observer Highway, Jackson Avenue, Newark Avenue, Clinton Avenue, and 12th Street to Willow Avenue then via regular route from that location.
    • To Hoboken Terminal - southbound:  Buses leaving the regular route at Willow Avenue and 14th Street will operate via Willow Avenue and Observer Highway to Hoboken Terminal.
  • No. 158 Fort Lee-New York:  Service will be detoured between Gorge Road in Edgewater, Port Imperial Ferry/Port Imperial Light Rail Station and Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken.
  • No. 159 Fort Lee-New York:  Possible service delays, along the Bergenline Avenue and Park Avenue corridors.
  • No. 165 Westwood- New York:  Service via Bergenline Avenue, 48th Street, Broadway/Park Avenue and 30th Street/North Marginal Road to/from Port Authority Bus Terminal.
  • No. 166 Dumont-New York:  Service via Bergenline Avenue, 48th Street, Broadway/Park Avenue and 30th Street/North Marginal Road to/from Port Authority Bus Terminal.
  • No.168 Paramus-New York:  Service via Bergenline Avenue, 48th Street, Broadway/Park Avenue and 30th Street/North Marginal Road to/from Port Authority Bus Terminal.
  • No. 181 Union City- G.W. Bridge:  Possible service delays along Bergenline Avenue.
  • No. 188 River Road- G.W. Bridge:  Service will be detoured between Gorge Road in Edgewater and 60th Street in Weehawken.
