NEWARK, NJ — Capitalizing on a need to keep people connected, NJ TRANSIT is testing a pilot program where customers can charge their cell phones free of charge at two NJ TRANSIT stations.
Charging kiosks are in place for approximately three months at historic Newark Penn Station and Frank R. Lautenberg Station at Secaucus Junction with the capability of charging dozens of cellphones. As part of the pilot, NJ TRANSIT is interested in gauging customer response to see if the program should be expanded in the future.
“More and more, we live in an electronic world, where people need access to their cellphones for work, for family and for fun,’’ said Veronique “Ronnie’’ Hakim, Executive Director of NJ TRANSIT. “This is an added amenity that we know our customers want based on what we’ve seen.’’
NJ TRANSIT is working with goCharge, a leading provider of mobile device charging stations to conferences, events, universities, hospitals, stadium arenas and more. Customers only need their cell phones as goCharge will provide a variety of cell phone charging cords, enough to work with virtually every cell phone currently on the market.
Additionally, NJ TRANSIT is evaluating the pilot’s potential for non-farebox revenue generation as the units have the capability to stream video advertisements.
